The human eye can appreciate the improved effect of motion up to about 80 fps tops. 24 fps is only the minimum rate needed to avoid obvious judder.
Tv is 25 i think and film 24 but they are prerendered so there not gonna skip or change in rate.

Just for the record, the human eye samples at an average of 70 times per second. Do note that as some first-person-shooters will attest, there are situations in which you will notice the difference between 70 FPS and 120 FPS. This is because of what's known as the FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT reflex, triggered by adrenaline. Caffeine will have the same effect, to less of a degree.

As a defense mechanism, adrenaline boosts your perception and reaction time, and allows your eyes to sample more images per second. This effect is temporary: even with caffeine. What most people will notice when their cards hit 120 FPS is minimum FPS, not max. A game that runs at 120 max FPS will likely have a solid 40+ FPS at minimum, which isn't considerably choppy by most standards.

Also note that the way the human mind blurs images to crate motion (or the illusion of) also prevents people from noticing all of the FPS and the detail within. Although the brain can sample more images under heightened reflexes, it can still only analyze and react to a certain amount, which is less than the optical sample rate. In other words, the faster your heart is pumping, the less detail you notice.

Another tid-bit of information is that the average reation time (eye-hand coordination) is 200 ms. FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT allows the body to utilize reflex actions for normal memorized patterns. A reflex is an action-reaction pair that bypasses almost all analysis. The reflex is based on a trained scenario: when X occurs, perform Y action. The better gamer (i.e. a twitch-guru 😉) is the person who is most capable of learning and adapting reflex-actions with some fair amount of post-analysis.

Just food-for-thought. The Xbox 360 version lookds great: no complaints at all. If your computer can't handle Oblivion and you're feening for it, and you have a modest home-theater, DEFINATELY get the Xbox and the xbox version. Playing Oblivion is best experienced with ambiance.

P.S. I have a widescreen and I DEFINATELY recommend it. Can you say Halo-2 peripheral vision? 😎

Caffiene is not this source of energy most see it as. The brain can speed up and slow down naturally, and does so through chemical reactions. Think back to the anti-histamine commercials with the histamine-blocker animation. The brain has receptors and chemicals that bind to those receptors, which trigger electro-chemical reactions.

Caffeine produces a chemical after it's metabolized that binds to receptors in the brain that trigger the brain to slow-down naturally, preventing the real chemical trigger from binding to that receptor. This prevents the brain from slowing down naturally, usually causing an almost perpetual increase in brain activity. All chemical reactions in the brain use Oxygen, and thus require blood. The more work the brain does, the more blood it needs. This demand for blood increases the heart rate. This is why caffiene increases the heart rate.

The ill-effects of caffiene show themselves because the increased work by the brain drains our system of the nutrients needed to efficiently produce ATP, the body's natural energy. We might have enough raw energy (Such as carbohydrates), but lack the catalysts to convert them. The body does a great job of simulating certain chemicals we lack to prevent a system shut-down (per se), but that's why a lot of us yawn at 3:00 in the afternoon without feeling at all fatigued: we're not out of energy, we're just out of ways to use it.

Make sure you take a multi-vitamin if you drink a lot of caffeine. Some believe excessive caffiene intake is linked to Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome.

Wow thanks for all that. I recently cut out ALL caffeine from my life, and at first it seemed I was slipping in energy, but after a few weeks, I acutally have MORE energy. I also think this is because of less sugar...

I only drink water.

oh wait - this is probably for another forum..

Quick way to save this post...

OBL1V10N PWWNZZZRRRSSS!!!

err..

yah

See this is what I wanted to avoid. Wanna talk about it, take it to another thread, and I'll join, otherwise simply put you're blurring sensation and perception lines. But I won't discuss it here, period.

Edit: Since it obviously wasn't clear enough the first time, experiencing sensation or perception problems? I've emphasised it!

Fight or flight does not improve the bodie's ability to notice the differences, only REACT to them, the sensation and perception is based on retina-A/rhodopsin levels and cone/rod response and on what parts of the cortex the image triggers and for what reasons. Wanna discuss.. In another thread. Period. :x

.

Well, here's the shocker: the Xbox 360 version is capped at 30fps. As you can clearly see, the "you NEED 60fps" stuff is bullcrap. ~25-30fps average is fine, really, on any platform, and the game definitely blows you away.
I can see the difference in Framerate all the way up to 120FPS. After that everything seems the same. Try capping your framerate in Quake 3 to deiiferent values to test for yourself how noticible it is. TV's are different though, they're much brighter than crts or lcds so you get a kind of "persistance of vision" which makes the lag much less noticible 😀 but i don't play my pc on a tv... Cause I don't think you can even get an HD tv in South Africa. If you could, it would probably have to sell my soul, and still sell my liver to pay for it 😀

Then post a link. I was trying to end the fued with real facts, rather than ppl throwing around numbers and arguing moot points. Has anyone argued FPS since my post? Only you.

Ironic, no?

A bit off topic, but my Dark Elf -> Assasin -> (Star Sign that off the rocky fellow which means I generate magika if some one uses magic on me), just doesn't generate magika anymore. It stays constant, and once finished it's finito. I have to use potions to get the magika up, but no auto regeneration. Game bug, or what's the matter?

Many thanx in advance!

I believe the description cleary states:

Those born under the Star sign can absorb some of the Magicka casted at them, but can no longer regenerate magicka.

Yeah, I restarted and read the same thing just now when choosing class 😳

Soz bout that one!

It's not all bad, though, especially if you're playing a fighter-type character. Get a decent ring of resistance (or be a Breton) and you can pretty much ignore magic-using mobs as you run up and smack them down.

That's hot. I have a spellsword with an absorb mana enchanted wep. A heavy armor mage is rediculous (and expensive 😉). It's a fun class. When I run out of mana, I start hacking at things. By the time I'm out of fatigue, my mana is full.

A Note tho: any starsigns that give bonuses to base attributes are worthless in the higher levels: you still cap out at 100.

The joys of your first character

I'm a weakling level 11 Breton Arena Gladiator who desperately needs to learn to soul capture so I can recharge my soul gems. Dem dar thangs are expensive.

Actually for a while I struggled in slugfests, and considered starting over a a Nord. But with my current armour, rarely is a battle difficult. I had one cave with 3 warriors who pummled me until I ran and found a perch to hide out on and plunk arrows and fireballs at them. I could have taken any one of them, but all three... no way.

I got the fix from ATi, and am running 1280x1024 HDr + AAx4. My only gripe is the NPC's hogging the performance at certain points. I'm using all slider bars for detail quite moderately.

Do you guys reckon that a more streamlined patch might resolve this? Maybe the unreleased cat 6.4? Although, I have a feeling that my CPU is the real bottleneck at this stage. Got a 6xx CPU (3.2) OC'd to 3440.
I sould've converted to AMD long time ago 😀 😀

ive seen alot of ppl complain about the first oblivion gate you have to close in Kvatch, cause there simply lvl 1....

i dont get it, it took me forever to get to lvl 2 then i went from lvl 2 to lvl 16 in less than a day. i did the oblivion gate at lvl 1 it was easy, and completed the dark brotherhood quests (for some reason im stuck at lvl 16 now even after doing all the brotherhood quests). the best way to fight is block there first hit, hit them, run back(they hit air) run forward hit them then run back again and continue of course this only works for one of them but means you dont get hit.

Do you guys think it will be worthwhile to open a new thread that will handle Oblivion tweaks that user's have found usefull with regards to performance?

Something like: State machine spec + tweak + result?

Bullcrap yourself! I personally see a huge difference between 30 and 60 fps... if you're eyes are incapable of seeing it more power to you, but that don't make it bullcrap!
Well, that WAS an exaggeration. I phrased it incorrectly; it's that 60fps isn't strictly necessary. I can out-frag most people in, say, Unreal Tournament 2004 at only 20fps, as I've found. (note I said only MOST, which is far from ALL)

I can actually clearly notice the difference to AT LEAST 120fps, the highest I can get the refresh rate on any of my monitors to go to. However, for Oblivion, I have little need for anything past 30fps, and am actually fine with 20-25fps.

Are you sure you two guys aren't noticing the minimum frames? I don't believe the human eye can detect much above 60 FPS... a sytem averaging 60 FPS will dip considerably lower than that and that could be what you're seeing... I doubt a system pulling 120 FPS would ever dip near 60 FPS... thus 120 SEEMS better.

Yeah I don't get it, your supposed to click when it reaches the top right? It's pretty much hit and miss cause I click all the time when it reaches the top and the pick still breaks uber lame 🙁 . One of the worst elements of the game.

On the contrary, I like the lock-picking mini-game very much. It has that random element that makes it unpredictable and at the same time makes you rely on reflex and intuition. In Thief III, after picking 5 locks I understand the basic rule and automatically could open any lock easily, given enough time. In Oblivion, a "very hard" lock IS very hard to pick.

I am 50/50 on this.

I do like the difficulty, but they did it wrong.

In the game you have up to 5 tumblers, and each tumbler really is of the SAME difficulty, the only difference being the number of tumblers you need to unlock. So they say that Very Easy is 1 tumbler.

But since I am playing a theif type character, and hes sort of a master in lockpicking, how in the hell can you tell me he breaks even 1 pick on an easy lock STILL??? Makes no sense. They shouldve made the actual tumblers increase in difficulty, and once you master the skill, very easy and maybe easy locks should open automaitcally..

AFAIK there is a pattern. Go through tapping each tumbler until you know the pattern and can predict when it will stay up the longest. Time consuming, but not very hard if you are patient.

I liked it at first, then grew tired of the minigame and started to use the auto button. Of course, now on average ones or above, I tend to just use the unlock cheat so I can get back to the main game. 😳

i liked it for along while, the difficulty of the tumblers is different, and very hard locks are nearly impossible till your skill is like 90, mines now at 100 and i can unlock any lock without breaking a pick. but i know use the unlock cheat its easier and quicker.

BTW Pauldh is that the cheat i listed in another thread 😀
