A friend of mine is using an first Gen. Athlon 550 MHz is an FIC SD11 Motherboard.
To what degree can this processor be OC'd?
Is the GFB only required for multiplier changes?
If so then the FSB can still be overclocked somewhat?

Thanks in advance...

Athlon FSB overclocking usually doesn't work well... You can get about 110 MHz. but it becomes very unstable in my experience. The processor probably has a fair amount of overclocking potential, but unfortuantly you need to change the multiplier to get at it!

I am running an Athlon 500 OC FSB to 110 (550), stable, Asus K7M, W2000Pro, 256MgRam. I believe to realize the full potential I (and your friend) need to use an add on multiplier card (such as Goldfinger, etc..) prices I have seen range from about 39$ to 79$, and of course you will need to open the case of the processor to install. From the postings I have seen, this device usually allows you to OC to about 700 Mhz (from a 500) with good results. It depends on your chip and it's quality, of course.
