hey i just got done OCing my 4870 and its amazing how stable it is.

here is what i did.

Got the memory clock from 950 to 1100MHz
Got the Core clock from 750 to 800Mhz
Increased the Fan speed to 60% at all times

im seeing 45FPS in crysis on 1200p with high detail and 2xaa!

you all should try it and its stable not one crash and i stress tested it to hell and back. also temps!

idle 38c Load 49c

That is nice Blaze, are you using the Ati CCC utility to OC? Those sound like the caps it places on the card, there are some 3rd party tools (like the AMD GPU Clock Tool) floating around that bypass that if you are feeling lucky.

(Hint... if you use the above tool make sure after you set the higher clock go into CCC and reload your fan profile, every time you change the clock it disables the profile)

I managed to reach 1220MHz on the memory and 890 on the core stable, with the fan set to 45%. Idle 39c Load 54c (I do have 6 fans in my case for a reason now)

It seems HD4870's have a lot of headroom for OCing. I don't know if I just got a really good card or what. I have heard a lot of people hitting the 800 core and 1100 memory easily with the CCC tool, so I am not sure why ATI/AMD didn't clock them a bit higher in the first place.

But if you don't want to push it, the added boost that you attained in the CCC utility is a win for anyone.

700 is the cap on a 4850 in the CCC, on a 4870 the cap is 800 on the core.

I honestly don't see a reason to OC my 4870... Its already sexy. But I did anyways hahaha. Set fan speed to 35% where its real quiet, did the max CCC OC (790/1100). I was about to use rivatuner, but it was having issues with CCC that I did not want to deal with.

Pretty sure it is pretty close to a 280GTX "Stock" with the OC, maybe a shade faster depending on the game... But that 280GTX can be OC'ed a bit too.

That said I don't see the point, I am gaming on a 22' Monitor at 1680x1050, nothing that I run other than Crysis (until the expansion is released) slows it down anyhow at that rez, and to be honest at the default settings its more than fast enough for almost everything. (Mass Effect, Supreme Commander, COD4 and so on)

I'll see if I can get around to benching it at those specs to see what it posts.

I used the AMD GPU Clock Tool to OC and after I did it my CCC fan profile wouldn't work anymore. So if there's a way to make it work with the AMD GPU Clock Tool, do you know what it is?

Ok this is how it works for me, I open CCC and turn off the ATI overdrive and then open the profile where my fan settings are saved.

I make a copy of those settings then open the AMD GPU Tool.

After I set my clocks I hear the fan slow back down to the default settings, exit the tool.

I then take the copied profile and overwrite the fan settings profile that was changed.

Then I enter CCC and reactivate my fan profile and the fan is back to normal with the updated clocks.

Hope that helps.

Also a word of advice - due to the way the 4800's work right now with the AMD GPU Tool, you are running at those settings all the time. Until AMD release a 2d and low power 3d profile you are always running at those settings. So you may just want use the tool to OC when you need that extra "Ummph", unless you don't mind the added heat and energy consumption.

on not needing to oc a 4870, exactly! when you get a high end card, dont you just want to bask in its natural stock speed sexiness for a while? see how awesome it is at standard speeds for 6 months before even contemplating oc'ing it to feel the maximum value of your hard-earned invested cash?? (I got a stock 4870, but i would have the same feelings about a shiny new gtx260, ...and above of course)

I would rather wait until after say half a year until the drivers are squeezing 99% of the chip anyway before resorting to oc'ing it. (cat. 8.12 should do the trick, now wheres my time machine and pendrive again?) Dont want to get impatient and end up wearing out my enthusiasm for the card in no time at all and then contemplating upgrading it.

Anyway good job on the oc's guys btw.
