Hi, I'm trying to pin the problem with occasional overheating.

The problem is that my CPU fan sometimes doesn't start and due to this, the CPU overheats even at idle.

I am running:
CPU: intel core 2 duo e6300 with stock fan
Mobo: ga-965p-ds4
Software: speedfan for monitoring and logging, easytune 5 for control

I have accepted easytune's default values so the fan starts when the CPU temp goes above 40 C, makes some turns and then shuts off again. This happens a few times every minute, keeping the CPU around 40 C. Everything works fine until the fan occasionally just doesn't start. The CPU temp slowly rises for around 1.5 hours until it overheats, causing a protection shutdown. This happens roughly once a week. I am running latest BIOS and software updates.

I am not sure wether to blame the fan, Mobo or controlling software.

Any suggestions?

Start by uninstalling or disabling EasyTune 5. If that doesn't work check the Bios for CPU fan speed control and disable it. Then try a new heatsink. If all that doesn't work it must be the motherboard.
Did you use arctic silver or a thermal pad while installing the processor?
