I have a gigabyte 965P S3 with an c2d e6300 and 1GB DDR2 667 G.SKILL. Currently my c2d is running at 50 - 55 C and idling around 48 -50 C with the factory heatsink. I tried to do some mild OCing by using the auto voltage setting, setting the CPU multiplier to 7 (was originally set to 6), the cpu host clock frequency to 315, the memory multiplier to 2.00, disabling C.I.A.2, disabling virtualization technology, disable C1E, and leaving everything else at default. I pressed ctrl + F1 at the mother board intelligence page in bios but the hidden settings would not load for the memory (which runs at 1.8v and 5-5-5-15). However, coretemp reported my temps in the mid 65 -70s C. Is something wrong with my settings to cause the high temps or do I need to look into aftermarket cooling. I really would like to avoid aftermarket coolers as I could easily spend the extra money on upgrading to the e6400 in the first place. However, if I must get an aftermarket cooler, can someone recommend something cheap yet effective. I would like to obtain 2.4 GHz and thought this would be possible using the default heatsink. Also, I have a Lian Li Case with two 120mm fans running as well.

I have the same setup as you. Running at 3.01 with idle temps around 50-55 via coretemp. Check your HSF and make sure it's installed correctly. 65-70 is quite warm for an idle temp.

Odd that your multiplyer defaulted at 6. 7 is the default multi for the 6300. Like I said, check your HSF. No reason you shouldn't be able to hit 333FSB with that set up at decent temps with stock cooling.

well bad news. i took out the motherboard from the case and rechecked that the heatsink was seated correctly and it was. I then replaced the board and connected the video card, memory and hdd back up and tried to boot. Nothing. Double checked and tried again. smelt burning and thought oh sh*t. Switched everything off and looked inside of case and saw small orange flame on corner of board. I do not know what caused this as everything was installed correctly and nothing was in contact with the board except for the case. Everything is still under warranty from newegg so should I RMA the board? could the powersupply be at fault? will everything else be ok, ie memory, hdd, videocard, etc?
