So I've heard that the general consensus with FX-series CPUs is that you can OC to around 4ghz with stock cooler. I however, can't go above 3.8 for anything over 30 seconds without BSOD. Temps hit upper 60s with 3.8ghz/3.125v on the CPU under max load. This is still somehow enough to bottleneck my 1060 6GB, and I would like to push it to 4.0 at a minimum. I'm upgrading to a new Ryzen 3300 when it releases, but until then I would like to see how good my performance will get. I have just gone ahead and pushed my NB clock to 2.4ghz, and my RAM speed to 1866 (specced at 1600). I've yet to truly test for results on these new OCs, and am hopeful for higher performance now.

That being said, as I pointed out in the first line, I can't seem to get my 8320 to that sweet 4ghz mark, no matter what I do. If I try even setting it that high on 1% idle usage, BSOD.

Any ideas?

Max temp for that CPU is 61C. https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/fx-8320

That being said many applications don't read FX CPU temp properly. Most reliable way to see if your CPU is overheating is download AMD Overdrive and look at thermal margin under load. Higher is better, if you're close to 0 or negative that's bad.

Also, when I do hit max thermals, it doesn't throttle. It just BSODs. I've no idea why, but it's a pretty clear indicator that I'm overheating.

Sadly, that CPU is at End of Life and no matter if you could double the ram speed, the cpu just isn't man enough if you want to play modern games 1080p@60fps it just suffers
$400 gets you a computer twice as fast, cpu/mobo/ram - not inc case/psu/gpu as your ones maybe ok - can even get a decent mini atx for $60 to save even more money

I'm aware of that, and have a case and 16 gigs of Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 I my closet. I'm waiting for next gen Ryzen to start building with my current 1060 6gb and a 3300.

960GMA FX from MSI, stock cooler. I'm aware that excessive heat causes instability, but it never just freezes, it goes straight to BSOD. Just thought that it should have some throttling before BSOD.

That board isn't suited for a 125 watt cpu yet alone an overclocked FX 8 core which can draw 200 watts+ from the wall even with a small overclock. You need a good 990FX board.

My old pc was and FX 4170 which was a 4.2ghz.I could bump it up to 4.7ghz on 1.4v as according to amd thats a safe voltage for the FX series.Try ocing your cpu first and keep the ram at stock and see what it does.Difference on my pc tho was i had an aftermarket cooler. Not a great one but my whole system was custom built so even when oc'd she was running cool.
