Odd Question... Which CPU?

But I'm guessing from what I have read in these forums that this CPU - STOCK will be as fast as an AMD X2-4200. Is that accurate?

The 6300 get's sucked up the tailpipe of a 4200, the 4200 is also faster than the 6400 in some tests, my general rule with Intel is nothing smaller than 6400 and nothing bigger than 6600...these 2 chips represent the best bang for the buck price/performance wise

actualy, Intel doesnt have a single chip that can defeat even the slowest of the AMDs. That is why they had to come up with the quad core... and even that is slower then the 4800x2. Sad but true.

Well, I'm pretty happy about the deal I got - So I just need a good yet inexpensive fan for the C2D-6300... I paid $160 for the chip AND a motherboard, the retail chip alone is $180 on newegg. And I picked up 2gb of PQI DDR2-800 for 209 after rebate.

Thanks for the thought... I think Fry's near my house has an ECS mobo with a x2-4200+ 939 for under 200 right now...

If you have a Fry's nearby, they are always (and I mean every week or every other week) running a Core 2 Duo 6300 (boxed) and ECS MB for $179... or $169... or $149.

There are more expensive units out there but for less than $20 you can't go wrong..

Not like you will notice a huge difference, unless your encoding. But hay, you get braggin rights that you can encode a DVD to XVID 10 seconds quicker.

Well, I'm getting the C2D 6300 for $159. And that includes a motherboard that I can sell on ebay for $30... Add $18 for a fan. $60 for a decent motherboard (Asrock 775 dual), and a 7600GS 512M card for $112 after rebate. $209 for the ddr2-800 ram.

So. the system will run me $530. I could not approach that for an X2 unless I dropped down to a x2-3800.

My rig is a 939pin 4800+, into which I'll be installing a 7950GT-512 card *(my wife's christmas present to me!)*

I dont hate many computer brands, and most of those, I wont voice my opinion. BUT ASROCK is an exception. As a tech, I deal with computers all day long, and no other board fails in strange ways, then the ASROCK.

It is the worst mobo brand I have ever delt with, support wise, or otherwise. Being owned by ASUS didnt help either.

Reuse CASE and PSU, it's a mid-tower case with a 450w PS. possibly RAM - but that may not be an option... It has an Nvidia 6200OC card in it now, AGP8x, but again, that might not be an option...

I'll probably re-use HDD too.

This *is* possible with the C2Ds. (depending on the Ram). My E6400 is sitting in this mobo (yes I know it's cheap):

ECS P4M800PRO-M (V2.0)

AGP, DDR400, and it works fine. I didn't have the cash to buy another gig of DDR2 and another PCI-e video card so I bought this board and reused the gig of DDR400 and my hardy old Radeon 9800 Pro.

So it is possible to step up slowly to the C2D.

I run three Asrock boards in my home, none of which have every given me any problems whatsoever. I've had more issues with MSI and Epox boards personally.

Epox isnt a great brand. MSI had some manufacturing process issues that caused a good % to fault, usualy out of the box.

I know from what people have said on these forums that ASRock, when working, is great and cheap. However, I offer my opinion because I have seen 100's of the boards and a great % of them fail in very strange ways, and fail more often then any other particular board.

Your joking right? I thought earlier you were joking, but you seem serious here. What do you consider a big difference? Not only do you see a big difference with encoding and multimedia work, but with games also. Unless you don't think 35fps is a big difference.

The facts don't lie, its the best out there. (no I guess.)
