Oh dear. Tech help for mobo that wont even POST?

Hey Folks,

I dont suppose anybody would have any ideas? I'm trying to get my
partners computer working for EQ2 and things are getting gloomy in
the household 😉

We had a working AMD 2700XP+ on an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard (two
DDR400 DIMMS), but the PS2 keyboard port went. I got a new Asus
A7N8X-X to replace it and theres no video signal, no bios beeps,
nothing. The Fans spin up, the keyboard lights blink on when it
gets power, but it otherwise doesnt respond to caps lock, etc.

The computer does respond to the ATX power on/off, including the
'hold for 6 seconds and power down' so the mobo appears to be at
least partially there... but even if I remove the graphics card
completely we get no bios beeps. We've also tried clearing the CMOS
just in case, and reseating everything a few times ... no joy.

Now, normally I'd grit my teeth and say 'nghh, dead mobo', and take
it back but a friend of mine had the exact same issue with the same
cpu and motherboard, yet web searches show that clearly this
combination should work fine.

Can anybody help?

I'm no longer much of a desktop guru, but it seems likely that
motherboard is in fact a door wedge. Go get it swapped for a Gigabyte.

Nothing wrong with ASUS, but it does sound like the mobo is faulty.

Last few times I seen this, (you are NOT going to like this) it was
people that didn't get his processor fan snapped down fully. BBQ AMD.
And the one guy that put the Athlon in backwards... with a rubber
mallet... but we won't talk about that one.

I have two suggestions:
a) move everything back to board 1 and see if it works there. If so,
take the motherboard back. Don't exchange it, get your money back, and
buy a USB keyboard.
b) if it doesn't work... well... I think you are buying a new processor
as well.

Asus is a fine motherboard maker, btw, despite some claims to the
contrary. A little pricy sometimes though.

There are known issues with this particular MB and DDR400 memory. It
would not explain the problem he is having however. I have this MB, and
an Athlon XP 3200+, and did have issues with some Dual Channel DDR400
memory, which, Kingston promptly replaced with memory that worked with
this MB. Personally, were I to do it again, I'd go with a different MB.
I have a fellow guildie who has run into exactly the same types of issues
I have with this particular MB as well.

In general I agree regarding Asus, however, this particular MB is one I
will avoid in the future, having one now, and having spoken with others
that have tried it.

Well... you do get that. Nobody is perfect. I generally prefer Sony's
cd/dvd drives. They seem very solidly made, and quiet. The next to last
one I bought caught on FIRE while burning a cd.

A bit ironic, but also distressing. Thankfully Sony replaced it (and the
scorched case).

I heard the "issues" were actually with the RAM, and afflicted several
motherboards from multiple manufacturers.

I see no reason to avoid Asus in the future. Although Gigabyte, MSI, and
others are all decent brands too.

Quite possible, and that was indeed the fix for me. I was led to beleive
by some other folks that it was a problem with the combination of that
particular chipset, and the particular ram chips used on the memory
modules. That would lead me to expect it to be an issue on any MB that
used the same chipset, not just that indiviual MB in question here, so,
in that regard, yes, you are right it is likely not limited to that
specific MB.
