I know the min is 233 cpu and 64 ram ..but I have a old nec with a amd 233 clocked to 200 {max board speed} and 64 edo ,ati mach 64 2meg vid. Has anybody tried to install or use xp on a old pc under the min rec specs? How did it work?? thanks for the reply

That MS's minimum reqiurements are for the case you install bare XP, say for learning purpose, no other software on top. Sure, you will install XP and be able to learn how it works, and continue to install your software.
But after you begin to install you programs, then you probably discover that you need more power in order to open and run some or all of your programs in normal speed.
So, minimum requirements generally speaking are enough for bare XP, but for everything above, I would say it depends on your software, what you are going to install and run.

K6 series is a junk for XP, P2 and Celeron works much faster than any speed K6 up to 500.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

XP will not install on a system slower than 233. The reason is that people with 233 would have bought their machines with win95, and win95 is not upgradable to XP. The other reason is that nobody should be using a 233Mhz computer 8 years later for multimedia, games, or business. Thus XP isn't for people with these older machines. Thirdly, the industry needs a boost, so they are hoping to stimulate people with ancient machines to upgrade.

I use a 400MHz and there is a noticable improvement with XP.

and win95 is not upgradable to XP
but a clean install should go ok

I've since installed it on a k6-3 450 and runs just fine, VERY odd tho, a colleuge of mine has EXACTLY the same k6-2 system and it runs just fine on there !

Next time you wave - use all your fingers

I am running XP Professsional with a 200MMX CPU and 128MB RAM. It works fine! You could even get XP to run on 166. But all I use this computer for is Word, Excel, Banking and internet and the occasional Burning of CD's.
XP runs great on it!

You are the weakest link DHLUCKE dufas !!
I got xp running on the cpu i listed 233 amd @200,96 ram {had 64 but got 32 more for $20.00cdn, and it is better for the simple reason of the better drivers for older parts so go'n #@%$@#$% ya self . Xp is a wicked system . So if you dan't have advice in a un critismatic way,,,.. lol than keep it to your self . Thank You n have a GOOD DAY GOOD BYE!

LOL....ok I guess it's obvious that you are twelve. A 266 Mhz CPU underclocked to 200 Mhz? Great going...

Nonetheless, I'm just passing on information given to me by Microsoft.

You might want to double check your handles. You came back on the wrong one.

LOL.... ok I guess it's obvious that you are another twelve, hehehe; it was not 266 it was 233 @200, LOL

But anyway, K6-2 as a piece of **** for XP, WinME runs at least 2 times faster on the same system, I just finished "fixing" 500 MHz K6-2 from XP installation to ME on friend's PC, XP is sick dog slow...
