I have an HP Omen 25L Desktop PC that’s been having difficulties booting Windows after system updates this past year. I never got around to figuring out what was causing it.

But looks like I need to get to the bottom of it now because it is now no longer bootable at all.

Before, I could restart it 3 times, have it pull up the diagnostics tool and just continue to windows that way. This always worked, I don’t know why the PC would have issues booting when it would boot just fine from the diagnostic screen.

But today, it installed the system updates and when I went back to turn it on it did the dreaded black screen after the Omen loading screen and shuts off the peripherals, which is also typical for my problem.

I have been out of the computer realm for years and what little knowledge I had gained back then is out of my head now so I have no idea where to tackle this from.

What should I do?

The first thing to ask is do you have all your important data backed up elsewhere?

If there are vital files on the system drive that need to be recovered, you need to think very carefully about fixing Windows.

You stand a reasonable chance of returning the system to normality if you download an ISO of your current version of Windows on another computer and use it to create a bootable USB drive.

Plug the USB drive into your Omen 25L, set the BIOS to boot from USB first, then select the "Upgrade" option as described below to perform an in-situ re-install of your OS, which retains all data and programs.

Take care. If you perform a fresh installation of Windows instead of an upgrade, you'll lose all your personal data (if it's stored on the system partition) and programs.
