OMG !! I need help quick !!!

I understand there are numerous thread regarding about gtx 570 vs gtx 580. The reason why I asked is because I have two friends who are selling these two for really good price.

One is selling gtx 570 for $280 brand new MSI Frozen III and one is selling me GTX 580 3GB EVGA version for $450 brand new. The different is $170. I'm torn between these two cards because for that much extra, the gtx 580 has more power + 3gb of memory. Idk if it's worth it ?

I have cash for gtx 580, but don't want to waste if I can save it ...

I mainly used for game and I feel that my HD5770 (ancient !) cannot deliver good setting on demanding games.

I need to answer them by 6pm tonight before they post those online for sale.

My specs are :

i7 920 @ 4ghz.
Ultra LSP 750W PSU
Asus P6t motherboard
OCZ 6gb ram.

I will mainly use 1920 x 1080 at 24" for now, but I will get hooked up for U2711 for $680 vs U3011 for $980... do you think I should pull the trigger ?

Mate both are fantastic cards, only you can decide how much you want to spend.

If you want the best one go for 580, if you want to save some cash go for the 570.

The 580 will only give you around 10fps more, so you need to decide if thats worth $170.

You don't need the 3GB version for 1920x1080. The 570 is a much better deal.

The GTX 580 is 20% faster than the GDDR5, and i don't see the price of the 580 is really that fantastic, any GTX 580 after MIR can reach that price on newegg.
The GTX 570 will almost max out any game out there at high resolution without a lagging of FPS.

I have the 3gb version GTX 580 and for the price I would go 570, the extra cost for the 580 would buy you a very nice power supply you will need to run either of the two cards! At least a 650w or better. The 3gb version card will help when running more than 1 monitor otherwise that's the only reason for 3gb.

if you are still running games @ 1920x1080 the 580 would be overkill at this time imho

a single 560 (non Ti) should play most (if not all) current titles @ 1920x1080 with high/max settings when combined with your cpu and ram

570 all the way - which 570 manufacturer/version is it? you can always Sli them in a year or so - and if you dont want to or cant sli you can make the leap from the 570 to 580 or something newer/better in 12/24 months

True all - but, if he does go for a U2711 or equivalent, then the 580 is the better bet. At the 2560x1440 it would def give better results

That's true, 2560 x 1440 requires more VRAM in order not to have a frame buffer issue.

After looking at your specs, I am not too sure of the quality of your power supply. I read your Ultra LSP750 is made by Wintech and the company is not known for making very good quality power supplies.

IMO I would get the GTX 570 and upgrade the power supply to a quality brand, if you get the GTX 580 and peak it out on a low end power supply the graphics card will be nothing but a paperweight.

Your power supply is rated at 45w on the 12v section but GTX580 min requirements are 42w. My Corsair 650w power supply is 52a on the 12v source and my Corsair 850w is 70a which is better suited for that graphics card.

Thanks for that answer. It has made up my mind. I will not buy any of those then, since the total of cost to upgrade is too much with gtx 580 + PSU (ax1200) will be around $700. I think I will keep it until BF3 and MW3 are both out; by then, all the hardware cost will go down and I know what I will need with all the benchmark and review. I rather save my cash now and think about it when the game push the cards to reach their true potential.
