On Board graphics going bad, replace with dedicated card?

I believe my onboard graphics is going bad. Frequent artifacts are popping up when I just do everyday tasks. The computer is about 4 years old and I don't feel like going through an RMA process.

Is it possible to simply buy a dedicated card and by-pass the onboard graphics all together?

That's good to know. This is my parent's computer, I'll probably drop in a cheap ati5450 in and make use of that pci-e slot that's gathering dust.
