I have an Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2 and I've just gotten another NVMe since the mobo has 2 M.2 slots, so I wanted to expand the storage a bit. The board has a topmost M.2_1 Gen5 slot with a heatsink, and an M.2_2 Gen4 slot under the GPU that's just using one screw to hold the drive.

The issue is that the new drive, which is a Gen4 LEXAR 1TB NM790, isn't working at all in the lower slot, and the old drive, WD Blue SN550, works in both, but frequently disconnects when used in the lower m2_2 slot after PC goes to sleep. These are Gen3 and 4 drives so they should both be working in both slots, I'm not sure why Lexar only works in the upper one or while SN550 is disappearing when used in the lower slot and after the PC is put to sleep. It's only possible to get it back after rebooting the PC.

There should be no slot sharing with SATA SSDs with this mobo from what I understand, and all of them do definitely work together for a time (with SN550 in the lower slot and before it disconnects), and both drives also show good health with 96% and 100% and no critical errors.

Also, the SN550 was having this same issue (randomly disappearing) for a short period of time when I was using my old B450 Tomahawk Max mobo, but then it stopped and it wasn't happening for a year until I switched mobos. It also never happened with this B650M-HDV/M.2 mobo while it was the only M.2 drive seated in the upper heatsink m2_1 slot, so it seems there are 2 different issues I don't understand:
  1. Why is WD SN550 disappearing randomly when seated in the regular M.2 slot with a single screw (both old mobo and current one)?
  2. Why is Lexar NM790 not working at all when seated in the non-heatsink slot?

BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment?

https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/31759/h/p2
Using WD's dashboard toolkit, can you see if there's any firmware pending updates?

As for your SSD placement, are you allowing for airflow over the SSD?

Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model.

Hey thanks for replying, so the mobo is updated to the latest 2.02 BIOS, the latest AMD chipset drivers, WD Dashboard claims there are no new firmware updates and the current one is 211210WD.

The SSDs should have sufficient airflow since it's generally pretty good in this case and the fan setup, the Lexar drive (upper M2_1 slot) is always hotter around 45-50c presumably because it's closer to the GPU's heatsink, and the WD Blue SN550 is around 35c, and is closer to the GPU fans below.

Here are CrystalDiskInfo panels for both NVMes. I've also found the section in my BIOS where the M.2 slots can supposedly be set to different speeds or generations, which is also on the link, so not sure if this would be of any help with Lexar not working at all in the M.2_2 slot (the one where SN550 is working but disappearing on sleep).

It also seems weird why there is an M.2_1 Link Speed setting on that BIOS page, but no setting for the other M.2_2 slot that is problematic.

Here are the specs:
CPU: Ryzen 7800x3D
CPU cooler: Scythe Fuma 2
Motherboard: B650M-HDV/M.2
Ram: G.SKILL 32GB Ripjaws S5 DDR5 6000MHz CL30 KIT
SSD/HDD:
Sata SSDs: Samsung EVO 860 / Kingston SHFS37A, both at 500gb, a random 250gb Transcend drive TS256GSSD230S.
NVMes: WD Blue SN550 / Lexar 1TB NM790
GPU: RTX 4080
PSU: Seasonic Focus GX 750W Gold (it's about 1.5 years old now)
Chassis: LIAN LI Lancool II Mesh Black ARGB (I think)
OS: Win11 22H2, 22621.3007
Monitor: LG C1
