One question about Apple computers now....

I am wondering, since Apple has moved to using Intel Core Duo processors and people are installing OS X Tiger on PC systems running AMD as well, is Tom's Hardware going to start benchmarking and reviewing their systems and home made Mac's now? I am just curious. :?:

If you worked the phones doing tech support like I do, you'd wish every user on Earth was on a Mac. Most people are stupid. You know it, and I know it. Macs are idiot-proof. And UNIX is 8 trillion times better than Bill's kernel. It may not suit you, but it has it's place.

In fact i do tech support and ill never do mac support AGAIN that was the biggest nightmare of idiots i have ever had to support.

I've had to support Macs as well, and it is hell. Not to mention: apple tech support is USELESS!

I have a friend with an Apple laptop that is still under warranty. The HDD goes out, and they say that they won't replace it because there is a scratch on his laptop (not kidding, I wish I was). He didn't get the original CDs to reinstall OS X with his laptop, so he asks about replacements and they say that he has to re buy the OS (when it's obvious that he bought it once because he bought a Mac laptop!).

I've even gotten better service than this from Sony! A client misplaced his OS restore discs, so I called Sony up and they shipped him new ones (for a price, but I'd rather pay $10 for shipping new CDs than have to buy the OS again).

About what? its like the average windows user. The system is "user friendy" so anyone can use it. Only problem is the average user who fits that catagory is a idiot and when you talk to them from the tech support side you want to kill them. A system is onyl as user friendly as the user is educated to use it. And in case im mistake alot less people use macs 😉. besides IMO anyone who has to call tech support for a problem is in the catagory im talking about.

Well, I have called tech support from time to time, but it's usually when I'm trying to figure out the specs on something and can't find it (e.g. when I was trying to find the PSU on my POS Dell and what the specs were/if it could be upgraded).

Well Of course it could be upgraded!

And I have only called apple tech for Itunes. A few times a machine has come in with problems related to Itunes that could not be resolved by updating / reinstalling.


APPLE TECHs are as simple minded as the users they support.

Guess my statment about tech support was to general. Calling for things like replacments, user name passwords, subscriptions things like that are excluded of course.

I agree though about it being as simple minded as the people they support. 😱 reading froma script all day to fix problems (or not fix them as it happens more often) doesnt make you a tech 😱

I cant visit that article @ work, but if you want further Dell info about upgrading here are some things to know:


Some dells have a proprietary board size and or lips that hold the board to the case.

Some dells still use the proprietary fan connection and will not allow you to boot without that fan. These CPU/Case fans are $60-100.

Some dells use a small PSU that is uncommon and hard to find. Emachines used them, and for the thin clients, you need to buy those PSU's online.

Feel free to post all the specs if you want me to see them, from the other website.

Yeah, it's sad when you call tech support and ask them a question, but then it turns out you know like %1,000 more on the topic than the "technicians" on the line do.

Ya, but being a good tech, you still have to read from the script... which is something I could never do.


How horrible would it be to know a beter and quicker way to diagnoise a problem, and still be forced to go the long boring route of automous reading via script.

My fav was the time i stooped low enough to get comcast and i was curious about the node load in the area so i asked what speeds i should epxect in this area. He kinda looked at me and looked at my computer and hes all 100mb. I was like huh? 100mb? then he points to my network icon in the task bar and says yeah your getting 100mb.

Need i go on? lol

Woulda been awsome if i had a 1000mb nic well that and the fact it was true lol.

After posting this i had to do a edit to tell you about this one lady when i did retail.

She comes into the store and since im doing sales in the computer area shes in i go over and ask her if i can help her find something.

She replys i need a color card. With a dumb founded look on my face i say a color card? she replys yes the program im trying to use needs more colors. I only bring that up because it just goes to show how little people know about computers.

For kicks i sold her a voodoo2 addon card with 12 megs of ram. i wonder how long it took her to figure out it was a addon to her video card like i had told her and not a video card. Now i realise going into detail was a total waste of time with her but i did it anywyas and explained what it was and how to hook it up.

Who wants to bet she took it to a computer store 😀

BTW, I have Comcast, but I get killer latency in CSS (8-20ms usually) so I'm happy with it.

Most of the population is err ... technically challenged ... so I'm surprised that more Macs aren't sold really.

Also remember most viruses only affect Windows, so that is a selling point for Macs.

Let's hope Vista is secure and does well, otherwise Apple could be on the march in the home user market.

I simply asked because I made a move to an iBook and have been very impressed with the stability of the OS vs Windows. I plan on moving to OS X Leopard on my desktop with an Athlon 64 when it comes out. IMO Bill's OS has WAY too many bugs when it comes out and is also extremely virus prone. I don't see these susepibilities is OS X as yet.

Not too mention with Apple going to the x86 architecture and 64 bit via Intel Core Duo and Athlon 64 makes it easier to compare benchmarks versus Windows systems, allowing people to make more informed decisions not based on a fact that, "Well, everyone else uses Windows." I fell into this traap for years, but have found that Mac can now read and run Windows programs, via OS X Tiger and soon Leopard, almost at perfect speed now that they are on Intel and AMD. This is not the case the other way around.

Yes OSX has less viruses. The reason being isnt it being more secure its just like everything else no one cares about. Things like mac os,firefox,linux do not have a significant market share to make writing alot of viruses for it worth the time. if mac os had the market share windows had and windows had mac os share we would be saying the exact same thing just in reverse. I have no stability issues with windows so that to me isnt a selling point. windows allows the user to mess with everything in it. Since however the avergae user is a moron they are taking that power away from windows slowly which to me is only going to make it as worthless as mac os. Course it will mean the average idiot cant mess it up. Back when mac and windows based systems were pretty even in sales viruses were rampid on both systems.

The only real security mac os and other uncared about software is lack of interest.

Course emulation software isnt really a awnser to me. Its like running DX games on linux its alot buggier. only thing i see wrong with windows really is the fact MS spends not enogh time patching software as hackers and virus makers make and break holes in software. NO software is imune to this there are just prioritys even for those type of people.

If mac does march on in it will just slowly shift from windows to mac's with these security problems. Mac users should be happy no one really cares about thier computer and be happy they have thier "security" and leave it at that 😛
