More info?)
I've got startup disks 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. The first one came with the
Network Adaptor when I bought it in 2002 to play SOCOM. I ended up
buying another Network Adaptor a year later that came with 2.0. For
whatever reason, the slim-line PS2 model with the built-in adaptor
comes with a startup disk (3.0) that does not have any demos on it.
Perhaps you can look for a 1.0 or 2.0 disk on eBay or somewhere...not
that they would help you. Disk 1.0 had online demos of Frequency and
Madden 2003. Disk 2.0 had online demos of Amplitude, My Street, and
NBA 2K3. Although I haven't checked lately, I'm certain that the
servers are no longer being maintained for any of those games.
If you are really intent on trying out some online games, perhaps you
should check out some of the $19 Greatest Hits titles (SOCOM, SOCOM II,
SW: Battlefront, Hot Shots Golf Fore, Syphon Filter, Ratchet &
Clank:UYA, etc.) that have an "online" icon on the box. Or, better yet,
grab the free Battlefront: Modern Combat demo disk from Best Buy that
has online play. And if you sign up for the PlayStation Underground on
SCEA's Web site, you might get chosen to participate in an online beta
test for upcoming games--they'll send you a demo disk for free (which
lasts only as long as the beta test is ongoing).
