Opinions on a build?!?

The wife is really into photography and needs a good fast computer to do the hours of editing she needs and your hp all in one just isn't cutting it's right now. I am into console gaming but would like to start dabbling in pc and build my own set up. What can you guys recommend as my set up? I would like to keep is under or right at $500. Thanks

do you need an OS/monitor/peripherals? do you fill out rebates? where do you live?
