I'm looking to do a mild overclock on this new rig that I'm picking up after my Mobo and cpu got fried by a capacitor explosion. Any input on similar components that would be better suited for a mild OC (I'm looking for 3.6ghz or so) on air would be appreciated, however I'm looking for input on whether or not these are good a combination more than the "best". Cost is an issue, however I still have a lot of salvage components from my last build.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16mhz
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition pc-6400 (800mhz) memory-4GB 4-4-4-4-15 CAS 1T
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P Motherboard (P45 NB)
Creative X-Fi xtreme audio
Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
2x Seagate 7200.12 Barracuda 500gb HD In Raid 0
ATI Radeon 4870 X2 2GB

i have an e8500 and the highest i could get was a little over 4.1GHz stable on air, with an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro... nice taste, we think alike...
what do you have for a PSU? i would recommend at least 600W.
if i were you, i wouldn't buy a sound card. you have integrated 8-channel on your mobo

this is my setup just for your consideration:
- c2d e8400 (e0) running at 4Ghz, and sometimes at 4.2 GHz
- Xigmatek 1283, with 12 cm fan
- 2x2GHz OCZ Reaper PC-8000
When running 4GHz, my max temp are : CPU-59C, Core about 60/61C

Well, with your e8500, hitting 3.6 is nothing. just stress test it, and if there are any unstability u might need to adjust your V-Core (mine is +0.1000 from default)
And if u just play with 2 speaker, or an ordinary 5.1 speaker, why bother to buy a soundcard when your MoBo can handle it, my advice is to invest on RAM instead. Instead of looking at latency, just buy a faster speed, so u can reach higher cpu clock in the future without bottlenecking your system in RAM, But that is just my opinion, correct me if i'm wrong cause i'm a newbie too in O'C ing matters......

Hope This help

The reason for the soundcard is that I'm one of those idiots out there that swear that it makes a difference in quality of sound. I have yet to hear an integrated sound solution mix and replay sound accurately.

This has always been a question mark to me, though: does a dedicated sound card really make a performance difference when playing games? Interesting thought. I mean, most people OC to only receive maybe what, 5+ FPS increases? So maybe there is something to it.

Oh, and I don't intend on taking it to 4, just want a 15% increase or so for free without having to jack around too much.
The memory speed and latency are fine for what I want. No need for the 1066 mhz and all that because I'm not taking it up that high.

Actually, it is not sufficient. I don't think it has the required 6 & 8 pin PCI-e connectors, and it has nowhere near enough 12V power.

I would recommend a Corsair TX650 or Silverstone ST60F.

remember, only pay for a sound card if your sure it will make a $50 difference. integrated should be fine for almost any activity, i mean, yours supports 8-channel.
