Microsoft would be pretty stupid if they allowed pirates to one-time bypass/hack the activation check and then run the software indefinitely. Of course MS want to periodically check that you're running an authentic Windows.

I just got bit by this bug TWICE today.

Later this afternoon, I had older laptop that was previously shipped with Windows 8 Pro, and got upgraded durring the offer campaign to the free Windows 10 Pro upgrade. Never a single problem until today it prompted me to install a legit Windows 10 HOME key. WTF??

At home, my PC had a fresh copy of Window 10 Pro OEM installed. It's been through various built updates. Like the previous laptop, this too is running v1803 and prompted me to re-activate Windows. Thankfully the activation troubleshooter cleared it up this time unlike the laptop.

whelp I'm still running 1703 on a Win7 Pro 'upgraded' to Win 10 during the July 2015 'giveaway'...held off on 1803 because of bugs and have been following what's going on with the 'October' update...will wait it out.

Still have 1703 Pro running...from the 7/15 'upgrade' deal from Win 7 Pro...held off on 1803 due to bugs...glad I did...will wait this one out til they get all their ducks in a row.

Did a Windows 8 Pro free upgrade yesterday only to be told I had a win 10 home license. When I got back into work today I ran the troubleshooter and now is activated

I had 3 customers i built computers for email me saying i sold them pirated windows (i bought bulk win 10 pro keys from an authorized retailer)
When i got home both my gaming rig and server had been deactivated. I was able to just run the troubleshooting it "upgraded" me back to win 10 pro, problem solved. However 2 of the 3 clients that emailed me were unable to upgrade back to win 10 pro. But at least they realize it's a Microsoft issue.

We have had several machines affected, all running Windows 10 Pro. One had this where it thought 10 Home was installed, but the others just say it's not activated. All but one has resolved on it's own, the last one just occurred this morning.

I have a feeling it's much more widespread than they're letting on. I currently do tech support for a major OEM and we've had quite a few customers calling in with this issue.

I got the deactivation bug last Thursday and it went away without me doing anything Monday. I did not panic when it appeared, I just went online and found out other people were having the same issue. I checked here and got the Microsoft statement. Thanks everyone.

I read about this bug, I wasn't personally effected by it until today. December 16! My son gets me because he just noticed his legit windows 10 pro was deactivated, I read about the bug and I also read that it was fixed, I guess not. His pc says 1809 and is currently installing the feature update, activation is working, ran a few command prompts I found that are supposed to fix it, but they didn't. Downloaded jellybean key finder but says the key is incorrect, called Microsoft trying to get it activated but with nothing but x's on the screen that was no help finally got it to tell me it would transfer me to a person, but instead it ended the call. Are we completely screwed here?

If Windows built-in troubleshooter doesn't fix it, it probably isn't the same problem.

You say "legit", but where exactly was the Windows license acquired? Was it cheaper than normal? Or has it been moved to a new computer?
