Ouch did i get to much RAM.

Ouch did i get to much RAM, is that even possible bcos i cant utilize it all.

Case is, i just bought a new system,
CPU : Athlon 4200+ X2
Motherboard : ASUS A8N32-SLI
Graphic Adaptor : ASUS EAX1900XT
HDD's : 2xRaptor 36GB in Raid 0

And finaly i added
4GB of 2x2 Cosair XMS memory modules. when i insert them my bios says th 4GB is installed but only 3GB is visuable, i read in the manual that there could be some problems with reading above 3GB with windows 32bit but that should have been fixed in SP2 with PEA (Physical Address Extension).
But i just installed Windows XP Corp 64bit version and it can only c bout 2.9GB of my total memory.

Is there a way to fix that or did i finaly prove,that you can get to much memory :twisted: .

Ps. Manual allso says that my motherboard can support 4*1GB modules

there should be a option in the bios something like

RAM compatibility mode" with the explanation doesnt show all ram available to windows..or something similar.

I believe that is a windows issue. Even though it will support 4gb it only utilizes 3gb or so I've read. I would sell 2gb to someone. You will actually have better performance with 2x1gig.

Configure the Memory Hole in the BIOS (This is the setting that reserves some Memory over or at 4GB for the system and PCI) and that will give you back your 4GB.

Yeah i found the magic "Enable this to use all your memory" Button, but it wasnt at the most logical place in the bios. So all is working now windows can see 3968Mb so im glad. thx for your replyes

I love when people say "Windows can't use 4GB at all", and I know they're wrong but it's funny to see "experts" say that, lol.

BTW: I"m glad you found that, yea, it's not in the best place ever, but what is? lol

So where did you find it?

I just bought a new computer selecting pieces then ordering online.

Every review I read both here at Toms and other online sights led me to believe that the mother boards I was considering supported 4GB of ram.
The mother boards makers on line discriptions said supports up to 4GB ram.

The manual that came with the board in the beginning where it lists the specifications states clearly 4GB ram in four 1GB slots.

I bought 4GB ram and as I'm installing my new ram in my new motherboard I look through the manuals section on installing ram and Wham! It states that less then 3GB is recommended as . . .

I'm like what the hec. With all the reviews I read you think someone one have mentioned this.

So is there a way to have my mother board and system recognize all 4GB or should I not unpack my second set of matched memorry modules?

Can I use WinXP or do I need send that back and get windows 64.

I found it under Memory configuration .. ( Weird place to finde it .. eh :roll: ) ..
well mine was called "HardWare Memory Hole" and i just enabled that one and it worked

I'd ask where you found this - bios or control panel or device manager or someplace else. Except if its there I guess I can find it.

I believe you said you have xp 64 . Do you know if I need XP 64 or should I be able to enable 4GB in XP pro. I know microsoft says XP pro supports up to 4GB of memorry. So the question is. Does it in fact not?

I am referring to some of the people on here (not naming names) that talk in their "professional talk" with big words that are used out of context, and than they say newbie sh!t like "Windows can't use the upper 1GB block of memory" or "windows needs blah blah to blah blah". People claim to be great gods and they don't even know trivial items such as that, it's quite funny.

I had also heard that if you have 4GB, Windows uses 3.5GB for RAM, and .5GB for drivers and system stuff.... as well as the story that it couldn't use the upper block of GB :roll:

Actually, funny as that sounds, it can be true lol

If you draw too much power on your +12v, and it dips down to the 11.3v range, as I've come to experience with a case PSU, performance will drop almost 5 fold. I had extreme amounts of fans (Vantec's that draw 1A) and Neon's (Again, lots of amperage). Now, this has to be a VERY SH!TTY PSU for this to happen, but it is possible.

Sorry .. it a setting in the Bios, but as i understand it you can only use it if its supported.


And yes its an Athlon X2 64 Bit 4200+
