The syndicate used hi-tech equipment to modify genuine chips of lower speed into higher megahertz ratings. The CPUs were then shipped from Hong Kong with a mix of genuine and fake parts.

Ahhhh crap I knew that something was wrong when my Computer booted up with my "Athlon" and it claimed it was a genuine Intel.

lol, i've been doing that for years... cracking the multiplier is easy.
without giving it all away, ill just say that all u need is a hammer and a screw-driver
