Overclocking having reversed effect

Hi guys, im no pro by any stretch of the imagination.. Earlier today i did some very minor very basic overclocking with my athlon x4 750k. Stock speed 3.4. I OC to 4.0 in bios and get told its 3.8 by windows. Anyway, i did a passmark test and get approx 2500 score.. (avg 4500 on a website i checked).. I then overclocked once, got nearer 2400.. Then again to 4.0/3.8 and get a little higher but still under 2500.. How is this possible? Also even for my gpu score (R9 270) it tells me my gpu is a little better than the old serious HD5xxx and slower than a gtx 680. What's going wrong??

GTX 680 is in 770/280x/290 league. 270 is far behind.

I would guess your problem is with too high temperatures. If your CPU is running too hot, it will down clock itself. Are you running with the stock cooler?

P.S If you are looking at passmark score - that this is complete bull****

Check to see if it's throttling. If it's throttling, then that's probably why you're getting a lower score.

What's throttleing?.. And my temps are unusually low for this cpu.. Yes stock cooling, yes its fitted properly.. 52c max... Even after the OC. I have ordered 212 evo but don't know if there was much point. Tempted to sell the pc, brand new build and im not exactly impressed.. Even my gpu is scoring low fps compared to what others are saying they get, 60fps max on lowest settings.. And 24fps avg on highest settings playing sniper elite 3 (although by eye im very happy with max settings even if it is just 24fps).. Anyone know if SE3 is just a GPU intensive game?

No its not throtteling, min and max are both set to 100%

It wouldn't matter whether the min and max are set to the same speed, it'll still throttle if heat of VRMs, Cores, etc. get too high.

Ok did nobody read the bit where i said the temps are fine?... The cpu fan hardly ever speeds up like it has done when it was hot weather. I've seen it at 4200rpm.. So i know how loud it can go, I've also felt the HSF and its touchable.. Even the GPU gets hotter. Like i said previously too, yes it is mounted on the cpu properly. So back to what i said... According to what i googled for what is throttleing, the cpu is not throttleing.. Im going to wait for my hyper 212 cooler to arrive next week and i will attempt a much higher OC (approx 4.4/4.5)
