P100 pt 2

Ok I have a sad little P100 in looking at for a pensioner, it was 18% fragmented and has 5 bad sectors on the hdd, I wiped the partitions, remade them, formatted in fat16 and reloaded the os, (95A), it wouldent boot up into the o/s, safe mode booted up but not normal, then I got a heap of error messages (There is an error in line 10,11,12, 13 ect of Command.com) So I got jack of that, dumped the whole lot, formatted in fat 32, and loaded Win98, It loaded fine, but I get the same thing happening, it loads into safe mode, On the install it told me it had finished the install, it then booted up to the Win98 screen and sat there.
I had doubts about the hdd to start with, and Im thinking this way even more now, anybody have any ideas?

Try running scandisk from DOS to see if you have a bad HDD. You could also download a diagnostic utility from the HDD manufactures web site.

I wonder...what is the speed of gravity?

Having built more systems than I can remember, I know installation probs are rarely the fault of hardware.

But in this case, I'd bet on the HDD or controller being at fault.

Try the HDD on another machine, don't waste money on another HDD when the IDE controller may be shot.

I assume you rebuilt the machine with minimal hardware configuration?
