P3V4X ram issue

I recently built a dual boot NT/98 workstation using a p3v4x with a pIII 933 and 512 megs of ram (2x 256 meg dimms) leaving 2 dimm slots open for later upgrade. Wnen i added two more 256 meg dimms the computer refused to boot to Windows 98 claiming the krnl386.exe could not be found. It is there because I found it in safe mode. When I remove one of the dimms, it boots to 98 with no problems, regardless of which slot I leave open or which dimm I remove. Also the computer works fine with all dimms installed when i boot to NT.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? Do you know how to fix it?

Hmmmm. Not sure what you mean by timing.

The DIMMs are all pc133 256 meg modules. I think they are all CAS2 but I'm not sure (how can I find out?). The first two are totally generic and the second two have Hyundai chips.

They sound to be the same. (The nanosecond rating, I was referring to.) I suggest you to test your DIMMs out with a software program.

that MB is famous for its problems, I have one and hate it! Are all the ram sticks identical, cause it HATES ram to different brands in the same machine....
Other than that, try the defualt ram settings in the Bios-ie not user defined

Thanks for the input. The thing that I can't figure out is why would it work fine with Windows NT but not with Windows 98? That makes me think it would be a software bug in 98 but i can't find any references to a similar problem anywhere related to the software. All the fixes for the problem seem to be hardware fixes. If my hardware wasn't right wouldn't NT have the same problem?

Thanks for your help. I assume you mean test teh DIMMs to make sure they aren't defective, right. I have tested all combinations of 3 of them. They seem to be okay.

Maybe the issue is not hardware but software.
Windows 98 could simply not handle 512Mbytes of RAM !

Try manually setting the CAS timings to 3 and any other timings to their max. If you are not getting any errors in NT (probably a blue screen) then the problem is most likely not with the memory or mother board or configuration in ther BIOS.
