P4 2.6GHZ suffers in 3DMark2001SE Tests

Hey guys, I recently purchased a new computer, with the following specs:

Pentium 4, 2.6Ghz, Hyper-Threading
AGP 8x with nVidia MX440, 64MB, AGP
512MB RAM
(i think that's all you'll need to help me answer my question)

I ran it through a few 3DMark2001SE tests, and was appauled by the results. Most computers with the same specs and exact same video cards were receiving scores in the high 6000's, low 7,000's, and mine got a lowly 4328! I ran it at the default settings, same as everyone else, but wasn't coming close to their scores. Is there any reason my computer is performing so sluggishly? I'd REALLY appreciate any comments, even if it's to say you have no idea. Thanks!
 
leme just say that i think you would have been better off getting a 2.4 and a better gpu than a nice cpu and a shitty gpu...

Moving on...do you have all of the latest drivers isntalled? I mean for both chipset AND gpu...also maybe updating to the latest bios could help...

True, I knew it was coming with a budget card, but the 2.4 didn't have the hyper-threading, and I plan on buying a 5900 Ultra or 9800 Pro sometime soon. I was just wondering whether the sluggish performance was from the card, or the CPU itself, since people running the exact same systems got scores almost twice as high as mine. But thanks for the tips on the drivers. I DO have the latest drivers for the GPU itself installed, but I DON'T have the latest chipsets. Will those make a difference in performance?

Also i dunno who your dealer is but the 800mhz bus 2.4C does have hyperthreading...

I have a Leadtek MX460 (AGP 4X), XP 2100+ and 512MB DDR. I get around 6600 under Windows XP and just over 7000 when running Windows ME.

What are your memory timings and FSB? I´m running my memory very hard at 2-2-2-5 which really made a difference to performance!

Who´s the manufactor of your video-card and memory?

Wow... considering you're running a 2100+ compared to my 2.6Ghz and a 4x AGP card to my 8x, that's really frustrating to see how much higher scores you're getting... I did a bit more research on my RAM, and it's DDR SDRAM, PC2100 (DDR266), but I'm not quite sure how to check (or manipulate) the memory timings, though I've heard the term used many times. Think you could tell me how to check/change it? Thanks!
 
Oh sorry, didn't read that last part about the manufacturers. Since all these parts are just what came with the computer, I can't say I know of their origins. All I really know about the GPU is that it's an nVidia MX440, capable of AGP 8x speeds, with 64MB DDR memory. As for the actual RAM itself, I don't have the slighest clue.
 
pc2100 on a p4 with hyperthreading? That is a very bad move on your builders part...pc3200 or AT LEAST pc2700 should be used on the p4 with 800mhz bus...

8x does not help 1 bit...for now it is just marketing...

You will not be able to touch your timmings...sounds like you bought this computer from an oem relator...you could try entering the bios to see if they have any memory settings but i doubt it...

Who built this computer?

May i make an observation...that normally dell/compaq/gateway computers of the same specs perform less than a home build...don't ask me why...probably they use cheepo mobos and bad gpu manufacturers...i am sorry to say that if this was made by a major oem...there may be little that you can do :frown:

Even with that crappy video card, you should be pulling at least 6000-7000 with a 2.6C. I'm getting over 12000 with a Ti4200 on a 2.4C.
 
My friend AXP 1700+ and Soyo dragon+ with 256 megs DDR memory and a gforce mx 440se 64 DDR got a bit over 4000 in 3dmark01se...So there is definitively something wrong with your system. Probably a drivers issue!

MAKE SURE you install the Intel INF drivers for the chipset, the difference is night and day. They should have come on your motherboard CD, if not go to Intel's website and download ver 5.0 .

Alright, I'll consider buying some faster RAM when I get the video card as well. You're quite right about not being able to access the memory timings in the BIOS, I can't even come close. Let alone overclock anything... 🙁 As for who built it, it's an HP model, and one of their newest ones. We got it for $1000, which seemed about how much the same-speeded computers from competitive manufacturers (dell, gateway). But here's the thing. I really want to get faster (and more) RAM, probably PC3700, dual 512MB. As for the graphics card, I'm wary as to whether or not I should spend $300 on the FX5900 Ultra, which is the one I want, if I'm receiving such lower scores than people running the same system as me. Lets say I spend big bucks for the new card, get scores around 9,000. Woo! I'm happy. Until I notice everyone else on there is getting 15,000. I'm considering making sure I have all the drivers and checking on the RAM before I get the GPU. Is this a smart move? Thanks for your help!
 
Gah... I'm running out of ideas. I e-mailed HP, and you know them... They responded telling me to make sure all my background processes were shut off :-\ One thing I noticed, however, is that when I'm running the 3DMark tests, is that the CPU doesn't even work. (I don't mean doesn't work as in is shut off, but remains idle) Is it supposed to do that, like it's leaving all the graphics for the GPU itself to handle? Shouldn't the CPU also be haulin' ass to keep everything running smoothly? Any ideas would be great :)
 
btw pc3700 is not necissary as you will not overclock...

Just stick with pc3200 or maybe pc3500...both will yeild the same performance at the same timmings...

This is a really easy fix. Just turn off AA and AF and ur scores will be normal

WOO!! Guess what I did to fix the old card. Not a thing. Ripped that son-bitch out and stuck in my NEW FX5600 Ultra! :-D Fixed the problem completely, and now I'm getting scores that are equal to everybody elses. I think it was just a problem with the video card... Darn that HP. Thanks for all the help guys, learned a lot, and I'll be sure to come back here next time I have a question :)
