I have built many systems but as of yet I have not built one with SATA
drives in it. I currently have 1x120Gb IBM & 1 x 160Gb TBM HD, 1 x
DVD-RW & 1 x CDRW all on IDE. What information I would like is I am
looking to increase my HD capacity on the main drive to 200Gb+ and was
thinking of using a SATA drive. My questions are
Do or can I use my 2 SATA sockets as well as my 4 IDE channels if so
would I just plug in the new drive and it will detect and use the SATA
as the boot device, If I am able to use both SATA and IDEs how would
you set 2 SATA drives along with the 4 IDES
If I cant use all the SATA and IDE connections what is the best way of
setting it up to give me the best option.

TIA for any help you can give me

You can use them all. Just make sure you set the sata bootable
and make sure it's on top in the bootsequence in the bios.
That's all. You can use 2 pata drives on the Promise controler and
or the IDE, but I recommend that you either buy a sata dongle or
sata drive(s) to connect it to the ICH5 controller. It's faster and
depends less on the processor.
I have 2 sata drives on the ICH5 and 1 on the Promise and use
a dvd-rom and dvd burner each on a seperate IDE channel.
Works like a charm.
