I want to get an old system running but am not sure it will be compatible. Should it be ok?

I can't tell. Asus' site shows drivers through 8.1, so if Win10 were out and stable I would tell you "no." But a lot of vendors are behind the curve with drivers, working on drivers for their most recent products first and catching up on older ones. You might ask Asus support directly. I've had good luck with them in the past.

You lose nothing giving it a try. Hopefully the WiFi controller drivers are included (I can't test it as I got rid of mine). The other components should be detected without issues.
