I currently have this particular MoBo on order. I'm intending on using a Seagate Barracuda 320 gig drive oin it. The HDD has a selectable transfer rate of 1.5 or 3.0 Gb by using a jumper. The manual for the drive stated something about the mobo having to be capable of autonegotiation in order to use the faster transfer rate. This particular mobo isn't that old so I'm assuming this shouldn't be an issue. Are my assumptions correct. I can't find the info myself.

frychiba,

The MB can handle the drive. You will want to hook up to the "SATA1" red connector, lower right had part of board as viewed in the P5W manual. You will need to go into the bios at boot to set "IDE Configuration" (on Main screen) to AHCI and then load that driver at F6 when installing Windows. Get the latest AHCI driver from Intel for the ICH7R south bridge. I lot of the drivers on the ASUS CD are old and have problems.

AHCI provides SATA functionality for your drive. If you don't load this, you will default to IDE functionality which includes lower speed, loss of early warning of impending drive failure, loss of hot pluggability and a few other things.

On the speed, I have seen a lot of comments to the point that Sata II at 3.0 Gb provides no noticable difference on drive performance over Sata I at 1.5 Gb. Seems the hardware just can't keep up with the electronics. Most drives would be hard pressed to keep up with IDE speeds. Now I have seen cases where RAID setups can get upto this speed.

I recommend you go with the Sata II settings, which is usually the default 3.0 Gb, and connect it up with the AHCI drivers.

Good Luck,

Paul

I need some help on this very topic...

I have this hd and motherboard.

I followed this advice and looked for the AHCI drivers (as when trying to install windows it complains there is no hard drive and tells me to F3 and quit). So, #1, is this the correct driver?

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2101&DwnldID=11309&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng

RAID/AHCI Software - Intel® Matrix Storage Manager [IATA61.EXE]

And #2, it is 4 mb in size and executeable. So, I burned it onto a cdr. When I hit f6 it asks for manufacturer disk but requires it to be in A: (floppy). Of course I cant get a 4mb file on a floppy, so now what? Do I need to run that exe on another machine and just grab certain files from the install and put those on a floppy?

Help! I am confused!! 😳

godlytoys,

Houseboat has a good link here but suggest you use #7 instead since it is a newer update. I'm sure #9 will work well if you have already downloaded and installed.

Good Luck,

Paul

hey, all

I have the same mb and have seagate 250gb stat HDD. I already installed winxp, so is there a chance to use this 3.0GB mode for me? Someone above said that i should press f6 during the installation of windows ...

grunt123,

The default for new hardware these days is SATA 2 mode or 3.0 Gb/sec transfers so you should not have to do anything and it will default to this mode. You should know that the hardware is hard pressed to get to 1.0 Gb/sec for sustained transfer rates. Burst modes get much higher but burst doesn't mean much because they are so short in duration. For all practical purposed, an end user will see no difference in daily use for SATA 1 or SATA 2.

Hey All.

Ok, I am having the same problem, i have this MoBo and the 320gb SATA2 Seagate baracuda... This is what is going on, I have had Xp running and everything, but now when i load up it says System files are missing or corrupt, and when i try to repair it says no HDD is found, I made a driver disk from my MoBo CD.

Any Ideas of what is going on guys?

OK, I will assume the following since you didn't say:

Setup your SATA with the AHCI driver as described in my first append in this thread with exception you used the drivers on the ASUS CD.

You are not overclocking the system.

Couple of ideas come to me:

When you loaded the driver from the floppy did you select the correct driver by scrolling off the screen bottom to get to the AHCI for the ICH7R south bridge 32 bit version? There are a lot of different drivers on the floppy (ICH8R/7MDH/7M/7R/6R/6M) at the point you make the selection and it is not obvious that there are additional selections off-screen needed for this MoBo.

Highly recommend you get the up-to-date drivers and you will need a utility as well. The driver is named: IATA61.exe with a release date of Aug 1, 2006. The utility on the same page, just scroll down, is called F6FLPY32.zip, also with the same release date.

If you are using an old driver, that could easily cause your problem. If you loaded the wrong driver, you would be more likely to be unable to boot. This is a common problem with a number of users though so should be verified.

If above doesn't work, make another append and we can look at other possibilities.

Good Luck,

Paul
