I have this old Alpha PAL6053 Heatsink and fan I've been using for years
first on an Athlon 800, now an Athlon 1800. Can it handle a 3000 or is it
too old?

Here is what Alpha sent me:

Thank you for your email.

According to AMD's specifications, the
3000+ Athlon XP puts out 74.3 Watts at
Max Power. The chip is rated for 85C Max
Die temperature.

If we assume a Max local ambient of 45C,
a 40C max temperature rise is allowed.
So 40/74.3 = .54 DegC/Watt or lower target
thermal resistance.

The PAL6035, with the slow/quiet Sanyo Denki
60x25mm fan is rated at .37 DegC/Watt, so it
would be OK. However, at Max power, it would be
running at ~27 Deg C above ambient. If this is
an issue with you, you may want to think about
upgrading to our new S-PAL8055, which wold keep the
temperature rise under 20 Deg C:

I hope I have answered your questions.
