my son cannot remember his password for his acer laptop, as it wasn't working for a couple months (power cord)

If it's a windows one, you can try to use the administrator account with a blank password, then set his account password from there. If it's a BIOS or a hard-drive password, you can contact ACER and they should be able to get you a password to use.
