Question PC crashes on some games ?

Hello,

I don't know if I am in the correct place to ask for this, lately my computer had a very strange behavior while playing some games : some fans seems to turn at full speed, the screen goes black. Fans don't slow down and the only way to stop it is to force shut down the computer.

I thought at first I had a problem of thermal paste on my CPU, so I changed it but it did not improve the situation.

Here are my specs :

Microsoft Windows 11 Professionnal
Motherboard : Z490 GAMING X
CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700KF CPU @ 3.80GHz, 3792 MHz, 8 cœur(s), 16 processeur(s) logique(s)
RAM : 32GB
GPU : GeForce RTX 3070 (Gigabyte)

The only way to reduce the probability of occurence is either to :
- Reduce graphics quality
- Reduce screen resolution

I don't know if I should download a software to get a crash report or something to help ?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Here are my specs :
Microsoft Windows 11 Professionnal
Motherboard : Z490 GAMING X
CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700KF CPU @ 3.80GHz, 3792 MHz, 8 cœur(s), 16 processeur(s) logique(s)

GPU : GeForce RTX 3070 (Gigabyte)

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Considering you're experiencing BSoD's, you should include .dmp files for us to look through.

ately my computer had a very strange behavior while playing some games
What games are we talking about here? Where did you source the installers for said games?

Hello,

Here are some correct details then :

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700KF CPU @ 3.80GHz, 3792 MHz, 8 cores, 16 logical processors
CPU cooler: Navis Evo ARGB 240 V2
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490 GAMING X Bios American Megatrends Inc. Version F23
Ram: 2x8 GB DDR4
SSD/HDD: GIGABYTE GP-GSM2NE3100TNTD
GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING OC 8G (GV-N3070GAMING OC-8GD)
PSU: Gigabyte P750GM - 4 Years old approx.
Chassis: Can't really tell what it is 🙁
OS: Windows 11 Pro
Monitor: Agon AOC3220

Concerning the .dmp file : I tried to generate a new file by crashing my computer but even with the .dmp file generation activated it seems to be not working ?

Regarding your questions for the games :

- Clair Obscur
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Space Marines 2

All on steam, installed in the classic C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps

Thanks for your help :)

Hello,

This computer has been made by a friend, it's not an AIO ?

That's what I thought also about the PSU, how can i really be sure that this is the problem ? Also, if it is the case what new power supply would you recommend ?

I have many different sensors for t°C on my motherboard, some of them unnamed so i don't really know what they stand for. Which T°C should i watch for ? The GPU one ?

Thank you in advance :)

Ok I understand, thanks for the answer

Is there a way to figure which component is problematic ?

Else what would be the recommandation for both parts as replacement ?

This indicates either GPU or PSU issue.

Since with lower load on GPU, GPU and PSU doesn't have to work as hard as before.

To test which of the two is culprit, you need 2nd, known to work hardware to test it out.

GPU testing is easy, especially when you have 2nd desktop PC. Just take your GPU out, put it into another PC (given the 2nd PC has at least 750W PSU) and test if same issues appear there as well. Or you can take 2nd, known to work GPU and plug it to your system to test if issues go away. If they do, issue is with GPU.

Testing PSU is essentially the same, but since you have known to be faulty PSU, which has been recalled, i would not power it on anymore. Instead, look for 2nd PSU.

For your build, 750W PSU is good enough due to RTX 3070 high transient power spikes.
Good PSUs to go for, are: Seasonic Focus/Vertex/PRIME, Corsair RMx/RMi/HXi/AXi, Super Flower Leadex Gold/Platinum/Titanium.
Or if you want the latest ATX 3.x PSU, then: https://hwbusters.com/best_picks/best-atxv3-pcie5-ready-psus-picks-hardware-busters/3/

(My 3x PCs are also powered by Seasonic. I have 2x PRIME TX-650 units and one Focus PX-550 unit. Full specs with pics in my sig.)

This computer has been made by a friend, it's not an AIO ?
Since AIO stands for All-In-One, it is easy to confuse it with All-In-One PC (e.g Apple iMac) and All-In-One closed-loop water cooler.
But since All-In-One PCs are rare and a niche, in the tech community, AIO usually refers to the closed-loop water cooler. Which your CPU is cooled by.

To keep the confusion out, i prefer to call Apple iMac and similar PCs as "AIO PC". While "AIO" refers to CPU cooler.

By the way, when I want to take a break from heavy gaming but still feel some excitement, I like to visit Major Pickem — it’s a fun platform where you can open cases and get cool skins for your weapons without stressing your PC too much.

I don't know if I should download a software to get a crash report or something to help ?

Thank you in advance.
It looks like you may have an overheating or unstable graphics card/power supply issue. The fact that the fans start working at full speed and the screen goes blank may indicate an emergency shutdown of the system due to overheating or a driver/graphics card failure.

A few tips to start diagnosing:

Temperature monitoring - install a free utility like HWMonitor, HWiNFO or MSI Afterburner to see what temperatures the CPU and GPU reach under load.

Checking video drivers - completely uninstall the current drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in safe mode, then install fresh ones from NVIDIA's website.

Checking the PSU - your RTX 3070 and i7-10700KF are pretty power hungry components. If the PSU is old or not powerful enough (less than 650-700 W of good quality), it may "drop" under load.

Windows logs - open Event Viewer and look in the System or Application section to see if there are any errors or warnings at the time of the crash.

Stability tests - you can try running FurMark for the video card and Prime95 for the processor separately to identify what exactly is causing the crash.

If the problem persists after all the checks, it is worth testing the computer with a different PSU or even a different video card, if possible. Good luck with the diagnostics - such cases can be difficult, but solvable!

Ok so some updates :

  • I used Prime95 :
    • No crashs on highest stress test
  • I Used FurMark :
    • 1920*1080 FHD Run --> No crash (78°C GPU Temp & Hotspot at 104°C)
    • 2560*1440 QHD Run --> No crash (77°C GPU Temp & Hotspot at 107°C)
    • When i tried the Benchmark P1440 It crashed once, and then on a second one it did not

Something I noticed : The massive fan noise is not coming from the GPU, but from the CPU Cooler, when I run furmark stress test (and it's also the case when I launch one of the video games listed before, the fan noise is the same), the fan from the GPU are running at like 90%, and at some point the CPU cooler starts to scream.

In the windows logs event, i only have Kernel-Power ones due to the fact that i forced the computer restart after a crash.
