Question PC doesn't turn on when power button pressed

Hi, I finally found a bunch of parts to have a PC running. I have everything plugged in. When I push the power button after leaving it plugged in over night, one fan flashes blue but none of the other fans move at all. I tried resetting the CMOS with a fresh battery, same problem occurs. I know the RAM is brand new and is installed correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated!

500W is the advertised wattage of the unit, what is the make and model of the unit and it's age? Remove the discrete GPU from your build and see if that bring life tot he PC.

In addition to the exact PSU, what is the *exact* CPU? There are something like two dozen fourth generation i5 CPUs, about a third of which won't natively run on an H81 motherboard without a BIOS update.

I believe I had everything running in an older case and reached the BIOS flash screen so I know the i5 will run on this board.

Perhaps, but if you don't say anything, we can't know about it. And if we don't know about it, we can't offer advice about it!

Serious, I know the i5 is compatible with my board and I'd rather not remove the CPU cooler as I know for a fact that it works with my board. Thinking back on my early PC building days, I will try plugging only the 24 pin and 4 pin without any fans connected. My PSU is set for 115V.

Sorry, I meant to say BIOS splash screen not flash screen. The i5 in question is not at fault, I had it running in another case with the same board.

In addition to the full system details requested (they are needed):

Make sure all the connections for the front panel are correct on the board.
If something's connected to the wrong pin(s) or the +/-s are flipped etc that can happen.

If you don't plug ANY fans into the motherboard, the BIOS will think the CPU cooler fan has failed and will shut down the system. Perhaps what you meant to say was you're not plugging in any case fans?

Wow! I haven't seen a computer PSU that needs to be "set for 115V" in ages.
Is your PSU really that old?

Hopefully, it's a newer autoranging design, capable of running on any voltage between 100V and 240V, not just on a nominal 115V or 230V.

I had it running in another case with the same board.

When you installed the motherboard in a new case, did you check for any metal standoffs in the wrong place? You might have a short circuit on the underside of the motherboard. That would explain the failure to POST.

I've got a bunch of old H81M-Plus socket 1150 boards myself and they're pretty ancient stuff. From the link below, I suspect the H81 chipset was released back in 2013.

There's a vague chance your board has finally given up the ghost.

If the PSU is the same vintage as the motherboard and a low quality White unit with a 1-year warranty or a mediocre Bronze with a 3-year warranty, it could be way past its "sell by date". It's the next logical item to swap out or replace.

Technically a CPU cooler is a heatsink with a fan and not regarded as a case fan. Yes, my PSU is old af and my stand off screws are installed correctly. My motherboard has a green light on it and usually that means the board is still usable, right? I have all the FP pins installed correctly with the text facing down. I will try using a new PSU and see what happens.

As I said earlier, your statement "without any fans connected" implies you weren't going to plug any fans into the motherboard whatsoever, i.e. no case fans and more importantly, no CPU heatsink fan either.

I just wanted to make sure you had something connected to the CPU fan header generating tachometer signals, otherwise the BIOS will get upset and the system won't POST. Sorry if I didn't make myself clearer.

A green LED usually means the auxiliary +5VSB supply is connected to the motherboard, nothing more. It's there to stop you unplugging RAM, the GPU card, or removing the CPU with the power still on, i.e. a hint to disconnect the PSU from the AC mains.
