I just changed the CPU in an HP Pavilion p6240f from the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 it shipped with to a Core 2 Quad Q9550. Upon plugging the system back in, it will not post. I've tried re-seating the CPU and clearing the CMOS, both to no avail. I looked at HP's page for this model and it says that all Yorkfield Core 2 Quads are compatible. The motherboard is a Pegatron IPIEL-LA3 (Eureka3) running BIOS version 5.09. After posting this, I'm going to try putting the old CPU back in to see if it will at least boot.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

You should reset the CMOS battery. Before working in your computer, ground yourself (touch unpainted metal).

1. Unplug computer
2. Open the case, find the coin cell battery, and take it out.
3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any remaining electricity
4. Re-seat the CMOS battery, close the case, plug the computer back in.

Note that this will reset your BIOS settings, so you might need to configure your SATA settings again.

Thanks for the quick reply. I followed your steps, but unfortunately, that didn't work either.

Well, the system will boot with the old CPU. Unfortunately, I've ruined my install of Windows by doing all of this hardware swapping, so it looks like I'll have to set aside 12 hours some time soon to reinstall it . It was certainly worth a try, and at least I have an excuse to build another computer now. Case closed, I guess.
