Question PC shuts down during heavy gaming or over processing of CPU/Memory ?

My PC is one year old with high specs,

Problem: sudden shutdown when heavy gaming , wont start until I plug off power and wait for 5+ minutes . note there is no overheat happenign or something, it used to handle way more heat back when I first bought it.

Also, I upgraded my BIOS and it fixed the flickering that was happening in the game. but PC is still shutting down.

It used to shut down sooner when I had OneDrive installed and it was eating up my memory and over processing. When I removed it, the PC keeps running for longer before shutdown occurs. so basically I am not sure if its my CPU, PSU or the wiring ?

thanks in advance

PSU model: Xigmatek 1100W Gold

Complete PC specifications please.
Could be a few things but sans the power supply I have no idea what we're working with. Could be the supply CPU. GPU. Needs some help from you .

How did you determine there is no overheating? What were the CPU and GPU temps when the problem occurs. Observe temps while doing heavy gaming.

How did you determine there isn't any overheating? A finger pointed into the wind won't do it.
One more time.... Install HWinfo. Complete PC specs and sensor for monitoring the CPU, GPU, Storage and other peripherals.

Hello,

I checked the temperarture using a monoitor sfotware, i also used OCCT test to put my PC on stress (CPU/GPU and power) , after 4 mintues it does shut down, temperature of CPU reached max 80 C, and for GPU it was about 70 C.

am sure it can hold up more cause my PC used to heat up way more back when I was gaming on SKYLINES.

below are my specs

Hey, that’s a frustrating problem to have, especially on a relatively new, high-spec rig. Based on what you’ve described, it sounds like there’s something going on with the power delivery, rather than just overheating or software issues. The fact that you have to unplug it and wait a few minutes before it powers back up points to a potential PSU or motherboard issue. Let’s dive into some troubleshooting ideas:

Possible Culprits and What to Do:

  1. Power Supply (PSU) Issues:
    • The fact that it shuts down under heavy load and requires you to unplug and wait before restarting is a big red flag. It could mean that the PSU is tripping due to overcurrent or undervoltage protection. The Xigmatek 1100W is plenty powerful, but there’s a chance it’s not delivering stable power.
    • Try This: If you have access to another PSU (even a lower-wattage one that’s decent quality), swap it out and see if the issue persists. This will help you rule out if the PSU is the root of the problem.
  2. Motherboard Overcurrent Protection:
    • Some motherboards have built-in safety features that shut down the system if they detect abnormal power draw or instability. This would explain why your PC needs to be unplugged and left for a bit—it’s the board resetting itself.
    • Try This: Go into your BIOS and check for any power-related settings or logs (if available) that indicate power surges or unusual events.
  3. Check All Power Cables:
    • Sometimes the culprit is as simple as a loose or faulty connection. Check the 24-pin motherboard connector, CPU power cables, and GPU power cables to ensure everything is seated properly and there’s no visible damage.
    • Try This: Unplug and replug all power connectors, including those going to your GPU. You can even try using different power cables if your PSU came with extras.
  4. BIOS Power Limits:
    • With your recent BIOS upgrade, it’s possible that some settings might have changed. Check if there’s a power limit setting for the CPU or GPU that’s been set too aggressively.
    • Try This: Reset the BIOS to default settings to see if the issue persists. If it stops shutting down, you can tweak settings one by one to identify the culprit.
  5. Thermal Throttling & Power Cycling:
    • Even if you’re not hitting thermal limits, the PSU or motherboard could still be interpreting power spikes as overheating. You might have better cooling now, but a faulty PSU or power regulation issue could be causing it to cut power anyway.
    • Try This: Monitor temps and power draw using software like HWMonitor or HWiNFO while gaming. If you see any weird spikes or sudden power drops, it’s more evidence the PSU or motherboard is having issues.

Other Things to Consider:

  • Memory (RAM) Issues:
    • It’s less likely, but bad RAM can cause system instability under heavy loads. Run MemTest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic to rule out any faulty memory sticks.
  • Graphics Card Driver Conflicts:
    • Make sure your GPU drivers are up-to-date and clean install them if needed. Sometimes, a conflicting driver can cause crashes that look like power issues.

Next Steps:

If it turns out to be the PSU, I’d recommend switching to a more reputable brand like Corsair, Seasonic, or EVGA. Even though 1100W should be enough for any build, stability and reliability matter more than sheer wattage.
