I know the left control is supposed to bring up 'sneak' but how to activate
it?
I left click and nothing happens.

Also playing the Havish Mod and have the quest to pick pocket a 'Messenger"
and so far no luck. Luckily I saved prior to attempting.

Any hints?

Thanks,
drybones

To enter sneak mode, all that is required is that you hold down the control
key (or whatever key you've bound to sneak) -- as long as you're holding
down that key, you're in sneak mode. The icon that appears on the
lower-left corner of your screen is just to inform you that you have not
been detected.

Your skill in pickpocketing is determined by your proficiency in the
Security skill -- rise in the ranks of any stealth-oriented association
back on Vvardenfell and you'll be sure to find an NPC that can further your
training in that skill.

You have to hold down the control key while sneaking. I mapped the
sneak key to the right control key so that I could hold it down and use
the arrow keys with one hand and the mouse with the other.

An interesting aspect of sneaking is that your defacto sneaking ability
is often better than your ability to get the "sneak" icon activated.
If barefoot or ln light armor boots, with reasonable agility (~50) and
modest sneak (~35), my current character (Orc, Lily Rose the Crusher)
has occasionally been able to sneak up on a Daedric Lord and make
several attempts at a Soul Trap before the Daedra notices her. Uhm, at
which point it is time to stop trying to soul trap (at which she is
poor) and take out Lilacor. 🙂

However, I think you need the "sneak icon" activated to have a good
chance at theft. I hardly ever actually steal things (mostly only when
a quest requires---really requires--it), so I'm not positive about
this. I often sneak up on things, and I am sure that being barefoot
does MUCH better than when wearing heavy boots.

I believe that the way it works is that detection is calculated on a
per-creature basis and the sneak icon is only activated when _nobody_ in
range sees you at all. So if your target doesn't see you, you still
don't get the icon if that scrib behind you does notice you. This means
that it's not too hard to get crtiical hits even when the icon doesn't
show. On the other hand, when you steal something, you really need that
icon showing, since you'll be reported if any NPC or creature sees you
taking something.
