Go for the Upgrade, at your resolution you will just be future proofing your system, At your resolution i would expect almost all games for the next year or so to easily be Maxed out with lots of FPS to spare.

You dont buy a graphics card based on your resolution, you base it on your needs.

You seem confused with the word "need". Say I need a card that will performs flawlessly at resolution of 800x600, do I need to buy a 4890? Absolutely no. You may want to but you don't need it yet (unless you upgrade your monitor)

Resolution in gaming is a form of specification of what he needs. That's why resolution is always mentioned and considered in reviews including level of detail, AA/AF, etc. It all consists of what the user needs for his system, not what he wants to have for the system.

A gts 250 is enough at that settings. Even with AA/AF, it would surely do. You could also go the ATI way with their 4850. Waiting for dx11 cards is a matter of personal preference. IMO, the only reason for me to wait for them is because dx10 card's prices might drop even further. It depends on what you want right now.

Better to w8 one or two months, then you will have newer ATI and NVIDIA chips, which will be cheaper than 100£ as are now ATI HD4830, and NVIDIA GTS250

1280x1024? What games do you play now that need more power? My 8800GS handled that res with ease, and still games ok at 1680x1050. (in TF2 I can leave everything maxed and still use 2xAA) The 8600GT is no gaming card, but it should be able to handle that medium resolution just fine, with the exception of Crysis and a few others.

The resolution you game at has a lot to do with it, but just as important is your full list of hardware. You cannot consider any advice given good advice until you tell us the full specs of your PC. Generally, a 8600GT is not considered a decent gaming card, even at the res you run, but we still need to know what else you have under the hood.

Well for your first paragraph he could still get a high end card, and it would play "flawlessly" at 800x600 for a VERY long time meaning he would not have to upgrade for a long time.

Sounds like something People could really need IMO

Where did you get those numbers from? My old overclocked 3850 at 1440x900 played crysis on "high" smoothly.
