So I have been noticing this sudden up rising in apple products and the ignorance of their users and I just cant keep my mouth shut anymore. (feel free to do that same, thats why I started this thread : ) All i hear and see everywhere I go is massive amounts of marketing on behalf of Apple stating that macs are for Hip/trendy socialites and PC's are for Lame, acne ridden Anti-Social losers along with the product image that macs are vastly superior machines. All though this couldn't be any farther from the actual truth of it I still have had many conversations with the A-Typical mac user and they always go the same way. Full of statements like "they just work" or "macs dont crash" or even the infamous "macs dont get virus's" all of which are statements that have been directly adopted from the elitest womb of the apple marketing campaign and none of which can ever provide any factual basis to actually back up their claims. So all I can think to do is break it down as black and white as I possibly can and ask for all opinions ( mac users please only comment if you have something to say that actually has factual basis and I havnt heard it a million times before or isnt a direct quote from a mac commercial.thanks)

1-COST. For this segment I will compare a top end custom built PC Vs. a Mac of equal specs from the official Apple website.

Mac Pro
CPU-3.33Ghz 6 Core Intel Xeon (haha i still laugh about macs using intel CPU's, well i guess they never really made their own anyways (Power PC was made by IBM)
RAM-12GB of DDR3 ECC SDRAM
HDD- 2TB
GPU- 2X Radeon 5770

Sorry for the lack of info, the great overlord Steve Jobs doesn't really disclose alot about the hardware he uses...(go figure)

Total $6071.00

Custom Built
MOBO-EVGA Classified SR-2 270-WS-W555-A2 LGA 1366 Intel 5520 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 (mac does not offer either sata 6GB/s or USB 3.0, this board has both)
CPU-3.33Ghz 6 Core Intel Xeon
RAM-12 GB (4X3) Corsair Dominator DDR3 2000 (PC 16000) (much better performing/higher quality than the conventional 1600Mhz ddr3 used in the mac system)
GPU- 2X MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CFX (better quality and HDMI, which mac refuses to support)
HDD- Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
PSU- ABS Majesty series MJ1100-M Continuous 1100W@50°C ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified, Single 12V Rail (much better quality and higher output than mac)
AUD- ASUS Xonar Essence STX Virtual 7.1 Channels PCI Express x1 Interface 124 dB SNR / Headphone( much higher performance and quality than integrated mac sound)
BLU-LG Black 10X Blu-ray Burner - Bulk SATA WH10LS30 LightScribe Support (another mainstream technology apple refuses to acknowledge and does not offer)
CDR-ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner
CASE-Corsair Obsidian Series 800D CC800DW Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case (just as aesthetic as the mac case, if not more)
OS-Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Full

Total $4,182.87
Price difference $1,888.13

I think this is simple enough for even the most ignorant mac user to realize that the custom build is comprised of higher quality/better performing components while offering many very use-full mainstream technologies that Apple refuses to acknowledge even exist( marketing, they want you to buy their own proprietary dead end technologies) while somehow still managing to offer a $1,888.13 savings over the under performing mac pro. The extra must be for the shiny case and social status.

2-OPERATING SYSTEM.
*I'll give it to the mac that that their OS (not even totally theirs, based off UNIX) is very good looking and simple to use but this is also part of the problem as the mac OS is designed towards the computer illiterate and is actually quite limiting and very pointlessly laid out to anybody who has half a clue as to how to actually run windows.( no right click, goofy dock that doesnt differentiate between running programs and icons, programs dont actually close when i press x, no real full screen, drag and drop doesn't actually copy files just creates shortcuts and buckets full of other stupid little quirks that annoy the hell out of me)

* It's better?? I think not, this pre conception comes from the masses of brainless mac users who hopped on OSX with a hand full off retard proof built in software and managed to make a movie, not necessarily better just easier ( in the opinion of the mac user easier = better)

*Compatibility...HA, good luck interfacing with anything that doesn't have an " i " in front of the name. This is part of apples marketing scheme aswell, yes they will eventually do what you want (most of the time) but only if you buy the i-this and i-that from the apple store (which will cost twice as much, starting to see the trend??)

*Crashing. The difference between a pc based on Windows crashing and a Mac is that on the pc the crash is in 99% of the cases caused by badly coded third party software, when the Mac just has a faulty operating system. Why else would Apple themselves run their india website on Linux RedHat?
There is another fun part about crashes on the mac, it's almost always impossible to trace the source of the crash. When your mac crashes you simply reinstall the system. Sounds like a fun thing to do in your spare time, well buy a Mac then!

*Charging for service packs. Rediculous especially when you consider what the differences are between one and the other (not much)

3-Virus's. This one is very simple, macs do get virus's just not as many as PC's because there are not as many macs as PC's. If you were a virus writer why would you write code for a machine no one has ?? If anything mac's are actually more subceptible to virus's due to the fact mac openly advertises the fact you do not need anti-virus software and actually does little to nothing as far as built in securities... they even ship with their firewall turned off!!!!

4-Upgrading and customizing. Non Existent, with a mac what you buy is what you get. Yeah you can upgrade(slightly) but the prices are so astronomical that you might as well just get a new machine.

5-Software. The amount of software titles for mac platform are very limited and generally cost alot more than their windows based counterparts. Yes macs can now run windows in boot camp which allows macs to run windows software but isn't installing your most hated badly talked about competitors software kind-of like admitting defeat ??

6- Repair. Yes applecare is great, I wont argue with that. How ever after your 1 (or 3 years if you paid the extra $400) is up you are S.O.L. $1,100 to replace a burnt out GPU...yeah not for me.

7-Gaming. Yeah it's the number 1 talked about reason although it may not be the most important to some people which is why I put it last. All the same mac's have a major game deficiency. There are next to no major labels directly for the mac platform, yes you can run windows games in boot camp. Still whats even mac about running windows games in windows on the X86/X64 hardware mac's stole from the PC world because they couldn't hack it with their own hardware. Again shiny cover, social status and astronomical price tag come to mind.

Well folks that really about all I have to say on this matter. If i missed anything please feel free to continue where I left off.

Story of a new Mac person struggling...any good resources out there for improving Mac use??

I am a moderately capable PC user, and loved Windows 7 when it came out. I was a Mac in the late 80's till around '95, then was PC mostly for cost reasons. Once 7 came out, I was really happy again with being a PC.

I have seen a completely surprising number of my colleagues switch from PC to Mac over the last 2 years, and was baffled by it. I was finally the only one left who hadn't switched. My husband (engineer) is a staunch PC, so I felt justified to stay PC with his help and influence, despite being hassled at work by people who said they were PCs and are so happy they switched.

This year, I got a free laptop through work, and my choice was a Dell Latitude 15" or a Macbook Pro 15". I kind of hate Dell, and so went through this internal debate, and was really struggling to decide. My previous laptop was a Samsung 460X, which I absolutely loved, even though it was getting on the slow side for what I was using it for.

I finally chose the Mac because the hardware seemed so much better than the Dell options I could choose from (clunky and really wide bezel around the screen...waste of space). I got all the possible upgrades, plus a thunderbolt display and a thunderbolt 6TB external drive (I am a research scientist and have lots of high def video from experiments). I thought I was so set!

Importantly, my backup plan was to wipe the Mac HD and reinstall with Windows and run it solely as a PC. I wasn't sure I could use all the peripherals though, if I did that (any comments on that, folks?) Thunderbolt display, thunderbolt HD, magic mouse and Mac Keyboard... I am still considering doing this, and again, my colleagues think I am crazy.

So, I get this supposedly easy to use machine, and I can't do anything on it. I hated it, and wouldn't use it for about 3 weeks (my colleagues could not believe that my massive 27" display was sitting on my desk essentially a mirror for 3 weeks).

Finally, I bit the bullet and started using the Mac.

It is 6 weeks later, and I am still struggling. I think my biggest problem is that I love MS Office, and use outlook and will not consider using Mac's little calendar or mail programs. And, alas, Outlook is not the same on the Mac.

I do love the track pad, and the display is great. But, I don't feel like this set up is blazing fast. I think I am running things in the background that are slowing me down, like time machine, and I don't know how to streamline.

I ended up getting a virus somehow, not realizing that I had to manually configure my virus software after installing it...I thought it would run in the background like on my PC. And, I didn't realize the firewall didn't come "on". That just baffles me.

I do not think it is easier to use. I cannot find the commands I need without going through all kinds of web surfing. I finally figured out how to have my calendar open at the same time as my Inbox in Outlook...ugh that was driving me bonkers.

I don't know how much of my frustration is due to MS making it harder on purpose :kaola:

Anyway, I have almost decided to stick with the Mac OS, but I would really like some resources on learning the OS better. Mac's site is ridiculous, tells you essentially nothing that isn't obvious.

That is my story about switching to Mac.

You do know that most any computer parts retailer does offer assembly service and I have never seen this charge exceed $200. Ok so now the under performing lower quality mac is only $1,600 more expensive... I could have compared this Mac Pro to any equally spec'd machine available from any competitor and the mac still would have been at least $1,000 more expensive still. You completely missed the point of this article was to illustrate the massive price inflation imposed by "Apple" not simply costing more by having a pre manufactured machine, there is a massive difference. All the same I guess you and I are just 2 completely different types of people, you value your time I value my money. Why pay someone else to do something I actually enjoy doing ?

Designers ?? What kind of designers ? Like CGI designers ? Like the guys who made the Transformers series? The Batman Series ? Iron Man series ? Ya know un arguably the most graphically intensive films ever depicted on this planet ? Oh yeah all those guys all used PC's by the way... macs didn't have enough ponies under the hood, sad day 🙁

Windows is a terrible OS. Put together with bailing wire and chewing gum. OSX is UNIX which is a real OS that was designed, not evolved.

The best example of this is on startup my Windows sytems takes 5-10 times as long as my MacBook Pro. Why does Windows refresh the screen 2 or 3 times? Why does Windows take forever to connect to my WIFI on startup?

my friend was being a cocky a**hole about his mac and bet me 50 bucks that it cant get a virus. well 1 hour and 3gb of porn later, the mac never turned on agian. untill he sent it back to apple but that doesnt count

Eh, after using my girlfriend's mac for a while (since her apartment's free wireless internet won't play nice with my laptop's wireless card) I can honestly say that I am horribly annoyed at how the OS operates. So, its safe to say that that I'll be sticking with a window's based computer.

However, I'm contemplating purchasing a used mac so I can familiarize myself better with the mac on a more intimate level. Mac people are starting to come to me for help and I have to send them away - I could really use familiarizing myself with the ends and outs of it.

Wow, this thread has been resurrected 7 separate times by my count (Its dead when a month has passed with no new posts IMO).

Apple (and other pre-built company's such as Dell) and custom PC's are for separate audiences, that simple.

Custom PC's are for those who are knowledgeable about computers and are willing to invest the time and effort into researching the components, building and maintaining it. This kind of operation cant (or at least would be difficult to) work on a mass scale. Business' would simply have too many issues if their machines were unique to each other. Which would also cause havoc if a machine broke, because then it would require individually trouble shooting each broken machine, and Time = Money.
We individual enthusiasts enjoy lower prices on our machines because we don't have tech-support for the whole computer (only individual components), nor do we consider our time as costing anything. We also dont have to pay a (profit overhead?) on the computer as a whole, just the components.

Apple machines (and all pre-built machines to an extent) are for those who are not knowledgeable in computer hardware or construction. They are not willing or do not have the time to learn all the stuff we enthusiast's revel in. They just want a machine that will do what they want, works out of the box, with the added bonus if it has a shiny case. Its even made easier since its designed to be tamper proof, they cant mess anything up. If anything does break, they know that they can just dump it at Apple's door under warranty. and a week later it will be fixed, no effort on their part.
Or for large scale business who need a ton of identical machines, that can be fixed easily and quickly fixed if anything were to go wrong. Each machine is identical, so what works on one will work for all of them, and mass scale fixes/adjustments are easy to do.

Different target audiences, that simple.

Hmm Idk why does my non SSD win7 system boot fully in under 60 seconds ? Why does my screen not refresh at all ? Why is my wifi already connected when the desktop appears ? My guess is you are one of the people I described that were somehow incapable of learning how to properly run windows so they just gave up and bought a computer with training wheels (mac)

I see much antagonism in this thread towards the fruity, allow me to channel your anger gentlemen, the marketing department is the source of all evil. Marketing is a devil's trick and all it wishes to do is rip you off your hard earned money.

Cheers, if you believe all the marketing bullshit you hear.

I'm sure after the dumb ass who posted this was done typing his opinion on his pc it crashed because he had too many programs open.
If your a gamer yes use a pc but if you want to be able to sit down and use your computer without the worry of a virus or crashing every other time you open a program then get a mac. I used a pc for years until I was fed up with spyware, crashing and blue screens of death so i switched to a mac 2 years ago. No problems since. I'm sure if I would've bought another pc I would be complaining about how slow its running or spending a fortune on a new os. Which on a mac the os upgrade is no more than $50.00. It's like buying crappy pair of sneakers, in a couple of months you'll need another one. So buy a couple of pair of sneakers I prefer one good pair.

In other words you've admitted your ignorance over the usage of a computer and bought a mac. Hey man, nothing wrong with that. Not everyone has the time and desire to learn how a computer works and how to keep it running in top shape. For those ignorant ones, Mac is a great choice, because it's been made so that a user is assumed to be a retard and OS is made retard proof so that even if you wanted you cannot screw it up. On the other hand, if you have some aptitude towards technology and figuring out how programs and hardware works comes naturally, you will not need to read this thread to understand that PC is far superior to a Mac if you know how to use one.

Um nope actually I am still using that PC to this very day. Currently I have Borderlands 2, Darksiders 2, Winamp, VLC, Firefox with about 15 tabs, Inkscapes, Ableton and adobe premier all running flawlessly on 8GB of RAM. You are the A-typical I can't not *** up my PC so I'll just give up and buy a mac type. Thanks for just furthering my point by making your self sound like an ass..

Because I don't like apple for the way they do business.
I don't like apple people for being so ignorant and naive yet pompus.
I can only be led to assume that I'm not the only one who feels this way so I started a thread where anybody can voice their opinion. The only reason I have been so tough on the mac folks that post in here is because the peddle the same scripted BS that apple has brainwashed into their heads, or their dicks. Either way this thread has every right to exist in its own happy little corner. If you don't like it don't view it, simple as that. Thanks for visiting.

Wow.... After killing a good 15 minutes reading through these comments, one thing stands out as painfully clear - most of you need to get laid.

What perpetually baffles me is this... How does someone else's personal preference in computers affect any of you whatsoever?

The short answer is - it doesn't, so get a friggin grip already. Regardless of whether we're talking about computers, cars, cell providers, or soda - its all about choice. That's the beauty of a free market system, we all get to choose what we like, period.

Also, do any of you actually realize just how ridiculous it is to make blanket presumptions about people based on the kind of computer they use? If I were as inherently ignorant as most of you come across; I could easily say, based on the very comments that have come from your own keyboards:

1. You're cheap.
2. You live with your parents.
3. You have so significant other.
4. You're unemployed or underemployed.
5. You're socially inept.
6. You have no meaningful life outside of some stupid box.

And by contrast... I have a wife, a job, a mortgage, hobbies that exist separate from a computer screen, and I have neither the time, nor inclination to spend endless hours building, tweaking, and fixing a damn computer.

Do you now see how petty and ridiculous all of this really is?

I'm a mechanic, a Republican, i own guns, I like trucks... And I've been a Mac user for over 20 years. Why? Because that's what I'm accustomed to and it just works - for me. So please, try to tell me I fit into some prototypical image of a Mac user. I've never spent more than $1200 on a Mac and I typically only buy refurbished. Frankly, I think unless they use it to make their living, anyone who spends more than say $1500 on a new computer (pre built or otherwise) is absurd.

And do you know what else? I couldn't give a rats ass what kind of computer any of you use - PC, Mac, or otherwise. If it works for you, then that's all that matters. These are computers we're talking about, not religion - so do everyone a favor a keep your preaching to the pulpit.

If nothing else, just remember one thing the next time any of you have nothing better to do than start some useless, ego-stroking thread such as this... With all truly pertinent, dire issues facing this country and this world today - does it really matter whether someone is a goddamn Mac or PC?

I hate apple generally with a passion. I am not a PC fan boy I know whats in Macs, my GF is a "I only buy things with an apple symbol" person so I use them or at least can use them daily. Please please don't even bother posting on something if Mac and gaming are in the same sentence because you can not touch a PC in the hardware department. The biggest thing about apple lovers 90% is they don't even know whats in there iphone or macs they buy for the logo. They are right MACS they just work and well at that but for the price they are the biggest joke in technology. MACS have this thing that they are the king of video and multimedia editing. FALSE, how can you be king without a god damn CD drive even when you did have CD drives no option for blu ray? Your maxed out at 12gb of RAM (lasted I checked) even though that's a lot for true movie blu ray editing you should have an option for more. don't confuse hardware with software like iMovie macs themselves suck for editing but programs are decent. Im not going to bother with gaming because anyone who knows how computers work know PCs will never lose in gaming or just raw computing power. Im done I don't feel like ranting or typing anymore but if someone brings up the iphone or ipad I will rant and shut whomever up instantly. Apple does not innovate anymore they are official beat they can not keep up with high end androids that now for the first time are sh*tting on them with specs, performance and now sales. I hope apple burns for the reason being apple only cares if they get there 60%

You are basically saying this PC vs Mac debate is pointless but i'll give in my 2cent anyway. Really? Hypocrite much? Nothing like a good red herring when you are butthurt and can't form a decent argument. You do realize you click on a thread tittle "PC vs Mac" ? I guess we're suppose to talk about your truck or your wife in this thread then? I laugh pretty hard at your pathetic attempt to demean anyone who posted their opinion on this thread. Seeing how this is a tech forum that has many user working in the industry. I guess you're off to complain about people wasting their time on youtube then?

No it's just funny when people try to give me *** for ranting on their precious macs, yet they siut there and take the time to rant on me... Oh hypocracy !

Schantzplayer

I have been an avid computer user since 1977. I find that these are tools to accomplish something. I have to tasks that are so consuming that I don't want to be bothered with playing with the hardware unless I actually want to play with the hardware. I use a software package called "Hauptwerk" that allows me to play a large cathedral pipe organ in the privacy of my home. It requires many channels of audio (14) and several midi ports (for 4 keyboards, pedalboard, pistons, and stoptabs) The software is available in Windows and MAC. Although I have been an avid PC user since the early 8086s, I want to concentrate on the music and not all the tweaks to get the hardware to work. I chose MAC and never looked back. Another application that I use frequently is "flight simulation". This is available only in Windows. I use heavy graphics on multiple monitors and lots of CPU cycles. I also have to interface to hardware for yoke, rudders, throttles, radios, etc. etc. This is a mature enough application that it works fairly well on windows. The biggest jump in performance was obtained when MS finally released Windows 8. I can access all my resources and the machine now boots faster then the MAC. Bottom line for me is the computer is dictated by the application and I like both platforms.

No they copied xerox, just like apple did, anyway do you care? Btw Nintendo comes up with new ideas and sony and microsoft copies their new ideas (also reason why sonly and microsoft waited for Nintendo to make a next gen console first) . Does xbox or PS fans care? No...

It really all depends. As rvd89 said, some people like to drive BMWs. They know they're a lot more expensive than say, a Chevy. There are some Chevys out there that will get better gas mileage, some will perform better, some will carry the kids and the dog better...all for less money, but they don't care.

They like the feel of being special, the kind of special you feel when you're pampered at The Club because everyone kisses your *ss. If they didn't, you wouldn't spend another dime with them. They want your money, so they do all kinds of cool little things for you so you'll keep coming back, instead of saving tons of money at the Y. They like the really nice carpet and lockers at The Club, the awesome Jacuzzi, the beautiful blue tile Italian around the edge of the pool, and the fact that nothing's ever broken (that they see). Some people like the fact they feel better than the people who can only afford the Y, that they are an exclusive lot of Chosen Ones and their hard work (or luck) has given them the right to feel this way.

Sorry, I might have gotten into that too much ;-). Apple's deal is they build really nice computers that probably have fewer crash problems than a Windows computer. But the company walls itself off with a closed system not just for hardware/software compatibility - it's also to rake in all the money. I do not own a Mac because of that. I suppose I could justify spending more on a MBP over a really nice Windows laptop, given they do use good hardware and make me feel like a pampered member of The Club. But I feel like after the initial purchase, there's always some kind of Gotcha....some kind or program won't be compatible with OSX...there won't be the right drivers for a peripheral, the cables are twice as much, or just "No, you can't do that" kind of simple, common sense thing I found out about my iPod Touch 4G (the only Apple hardware we own), even after the first person at Apple Care I spoke to told me I could (if I first bought the rediculousy priced proprietary Apple adapter cable).

That's why I don't believe in Mac. If it were just price of the computer, I could probably scrape up the money for the purchase, if, and only if it were definitively that much better of an OS (some say yes, some say no), and, and this the biggie, that were the end of it. But just like owning a BMW, everything after the purchase can cost you a lot more than a PC over time. Not to mention, there are things and features about Macs that are designed out of them, because that's what Steve wanted. Steve knows what's best ;-).
