Question PC will boot only after pressing CMOS reset on ASUS MAXIMUS VII RANGER ?

Specs:
ASUS MAXIMUS VII RANGER
Intel i7 4790K
GTX 980
16Gb HyperX Fury

Something very strange started to happen. After 5 years without problems I started having a problem with booting into windows. When I press the power bottom the computer lights up, the fans start spinning, but it won't post. The error code on the motherboard shows the number 00 which corresponds to anything.
To find the problem I took the whole system apart and back together, I still had the issue. So out off options I saw the clear CMOS button on my motherboard and after pressing it I could boot again. Now every ~second time I want to start up my rig, I run into the 00 not post error which is then resolved by pressing the clear CMOS button. Does anyone has an idea what could be the problem?
When I manage to boot my pc works without a problem with the same performance as before...
Thanks in advance.

I have exactly the same problem! With the same motherboard, CPU, and GPU.
Did you find a solution?

First, the PC wouldn't boot (Code 00) even after clearing the CMOS. I moved the graphics card to the PCI slot x8, and now I can boot it after clearing cmos 3-4 times.
Sometimes I'm getting the code 55 (Memory not detected) but the RAM is working because I have a second motherboard where I have tested each component.
I have also tried flashing the most recent BIOS but I get the same results.
I'm convinced the Asus Ranger VII is not working properly, but I'd like to find a way to fix it because my other motherboard is a cheap Asrock with only 2 slots of RAM.

Now this is strange

I have the same mobo
intel 4690k
gtx 970
16 gb hyperX ram (not sure on exact one)
corsair h80i cooler

I've been struggling with booting issues for a while now, possibly around the same time you guys posted on here.

Although mine is slightly different, when I push the power button my pc turns on and then turns itself off after 1/2 a second. After that it turns itself back on again, fans on lights on but no reassuring bleep and a 00 code on the mb.

I used to be able to get it to post after a few tries powering off and on again, but now it will only boot if I reset the cmos with the little button near the bottom of the mb.

considering the time frame our issues have occured could we be looking at an update that has caused this?

So I could determine that the memory isn't the problem...
Odinogle you actually describe the behavior better, that same thing happened on my machine.
The weird thing about it in my eyes was, that it was not constantly not booting. After resetting the CMOS I could boot again normally for some number of boots (this number being completely random in my eyes).
I had in the same time some troubles with windows update and got so frustrated that all the proposed fixes for that didn't work that I decided to reinstall windows completely. Since then approximately 1 Month I don't have this problem anymore.
I definitely don't have enough knowledge about windows and driver stuff that I can say these two things are in any way related, but it seems to work now. The more I think about it this two things shouldn't be connected in any way actually, since a driver issue should happen when booted into windows which isn't happening right...
I know this isn't in any way a fix, more a surrender to it all but I was so annoyed by it that I decided to do it...

Oh you actually fixed with a windows reinstall? Did you go back to a previous version? I have considered this because I believe my issues started occuring after an update, but I couldn't be sure so I never tried it.

So my decision to do it was because I simply could not do any updates anymore, all of them reported an error while installing. So independent of this issue I would have needed to reinstall windows since no fix fixed it.
Since clearing the CMOS solves the problem, the only explanation I have is that for some reason windows changes the bios settings (since they seem to be saved in the CMOS), which I don't even know Windows has the ability to...
So I just installed the newest version of windows, like I would have installed it on a completely new machine. Since my important data isn't saved on my boot drive a reinstallation wasn't that big a deal.

Okay odinogle keep us updated. I don't think Windows is related to the issue, because I also tried booting the computer without connected disks with no success. But I hope it works for you!

Okay so after reinstalling windows via usb stick I've succesfully turned off and back on without post/boot issues.

I noticed when reinstalling windows there were a lot of partitions on my ssd, I deleted these to ensure my install was fully clean and not leaving anything behind. I'm going to celebrate with a beer!

Tomorrow I will update you guys to let you know if it works in the morning (It never used to work after a nights sleep haha)

Replacing the 2032 battery was one of my first attemps, it was dead but putting a new one in didn't fix the issue.

Unfortunately the morning boot has not gone to plan...

haven’t got it to boot yet even with the cmos button. Now interestingly Every few attempts of booting my cpu fan doesn’t turn on (corsair h80i) perhaps my pc is detecting a fault in the cooler and cutting power.
Reinstalling oddly enough has caused this new behaviour, including one where the pc turns on and off repeatedly in attempts to boot.

I’ve finally fixed it.
I unplugged my secondary hard drive, it must’ve had some corruption affecting the boot up. Either that or the SATA port was faulty (I plugged it back in a different one). Now that I’m using a different SATA port and have fully formatted the hard drive I’ve had zero boot faults.

So yeah if any of you guys get this issue check your hard drives. Even though I wasn’t even booting from that drive it was doing something to disturb booting completely very strange.
Thanks for the help you guys offered anyway!
