Question PC will not start at all, after taking out and putting back in PSU

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this question, but I really don't know what the problem is. A few days ago, I got a new gpu for my pc, but the power supply I had was not strong enough so I bought a new one. Unfortunately, when I bought my pc I made the mistake of buying an HP prebuilt (HP 6200 Pro MTW) . I tried to install the new power supply with an adapter to change the 24 pin power connector to a 6 pin but it did not seem to work. I put the original psu back in and made sure everything was connected correctly and the outlets/power cable were working. However, absolutely nothing happens when I press the power button. No fans start, no beeps, nothing. There's not even a green light on my motherboard when it's plugged in. There's no switch on the psu to turn it on, so I don't think it's off, and not noticeable damage on any components except a few scratches on the plastic of the 4-pin connectors on the motherboard. Could I have fried it when trying the new power supply?

I don't think I used the wrong adapter. The PSU i bought had a 24 pin power connector, and I used a 24 pin to 6 pin adapter advertised for this purpose to connect it to the motherboard.

put a period at the beginning because it wouldn't let me post a link

That adapter is for Dell systems.
HP 6200 Pro - is not listed as compatible.

This cable was only designed for some types of Dell motherboards as listed in the 3rd Point. In order to avoid any compatible problems, please carefully check your PC type before placing order or contact us if you are not sure about it. If you connect this cable to other incompatible PC or motherboard, it will burn or damage the motherboard and we won’t take any responsibility for wrongly using or installing;

Ok, I should not have assumed it would work. Could I buy a new motherboard and move all my other components onto it? If so, what motherboard should I buy as I don't want to make any more mistakes.

Well, a motherboard that's compatible with your components. Hard to recommend a motherboard without knowing what those components are. You'll almost certainly need a new case as well as hp is notorious for using proprietary motherboard form factors in non-standard cases.

The parts in my pc are
-i7-2600
-4 sticks of 4gb ddr3 ram -
-single fan rtx 3060
-atx 500w 8.9 * 4 * 7 inch power supply
-3.5 by 3.5 inch case fan
-a 3.5 by 3.5 in cpu fan
-500 gb ssd
-2TB HDD
I also have an optical disk drive, but that doesn't matter as I never use it. Does that help?

What's the *exact* PSU? ATX is a form factor. These details are important as are great and terrible power supplies at almost every possible wattage. This is a detail-oriented hobby and it would stink to lose parts a second time from not sweating the details!

the exact psu is a Thermaltake Smart 500 W 80+
I went onto pcpartpicker to see I could find a new compatible case and motherboard, so here is what my pc would be with a new case but I haven't been able to find a compatible motherboard at a price I'm happy with (is around $100 possible here?)

Also thank you for sticking with me here, this is my first time going this in-depth with my pc hardware.

The 2600k is a downright ancient chip - you can probably find a cheap CPU/RAM/motherboard combo that would be a big step up for not much money. All depends on budget, of course.

Sorry to have to ask this, but do you have any recommendations of CPU/RAM/motherboard combos that would work with the rest of the parts?
And so you don't have to click on the link I posted the case I'm planning to get right now is a Phanteks Eclipse G300A 1 Fan ATX Mid Tower
However, I might have to stick with the old cpu for now and just try to get a compatible motherboard as my budget is only around $100 - $150. Not looking for anything fancy, just something that will work with my other parts.

That's a really awful PSU. Cheap, group-regulated junk that has no business ever being connected with a modern PC. If you just got it, you should be within your return window as an RTX 3060 should never even be turned on with it.

For an RTX 3060 system, nothing lower than Tier B PSU should ever be considered.

You can go even cheaper but I was trying to let you still use all 4 drr3 memory you own.

No wonder why so many people who had owned an 1155 motherboard with only 2 memory slots now look back and say to old no good now. So 4x2=8 or 8x2=16 Gb system memory.

You throw 8x4 into these old system and for the first time you open them up. Anyways it is getting time to start looking for newer parts but if this can band aid yours till than. Happy gaming

honestly wouldnt reuse that psu you connected there is also zero guarantee that it didn't take other parts with it

it could have took out the cpu gpu and motherboard as well as damaged the psu you connected.

with the assumption that the gpu works and harddrives this is my recomendation on the cheap

I've always used old parts and they might not be able to reach max performance on certain games, but they still work. Thank you!
