Pc wont boot from cd

A friends pc needs an operating system reinstalling but when the 'Boot from cd' comes up nothing else happens. On my own pc when i insert the cd it says 'boot from cd.... press any key to continue' but it just doesn't want to do this. Ive tried a differnt cd drive but it has no effect. can anyone shed any light on the subject?

Check to make sure the disk you are using is a CD and not a DVD and that the drive can read the disk type you are using.

Have you tried manually selecting the boot device? Try hitting a key anyway after it tries to load the disk even if you don't see the "press any key" message.
