I have a x400 4650g from minisforum. Windows 10 installed and no issues with just the stock parts (250GB SSD and 2x8GB RAM).
Trying to install 2.5" SK hynix Gold S31 SSD for extra storage.

  1. When the pc is off and I plug in the 2nd SSD (for storage), the pc shows the "Minisforum" logo and does not show the circle of dots at the bottom. I am also unable to open the BIOS.
  2. When I turn on the pc without the 2nd SSD plugged in, it boots to windows normally. I then plug in the 2nd SSD and go to disk management and do not see the drive and am unable to initialize it.
  3. When I plug the 2nd SSD into my other PC, it is able to recognize the drive and initialize it. I then plug it back into the x400 and the same issues occur.

Please advise, your help would be greatly appreciated.

The SSD is brand new out of the box. By different port, do you mean another port for the SSD? There is 1 port for the NVME (stock) and 1 port for additional storage (SSD I am trying to install) on the x400. When I connected it to another pc, I was able to initialize it and assign it a letter. I then connected the SSD to a 3rd pc and it was able to recognize it as a D: drive.

My limited experience and knowledge has me stumped as this is the first time I encountered this problem and my searching skills has not brought up anything that I can understand as a fix.

I meant another port for the Hynix.

I guess your device has only 1 SATA port? Unusual, but possible I suppose.

I have no idea what a "x400 4650g from minisforum" is.

Bad motherboard or hardware unrelated to the SSD?

Has ANY drive EVER worked when connected to the attempted port?

Try a different cable as well if available.

The x400 4650g is a mini pc. It comes pre-assembled with SSD/RAM or barebones. Unfortunately, I am not able to change out the cables. I have ordered a couple more SSDs so will test those when they arrive.

I am a bit confused as I was able to install Windows 10 on 2 different NVME (250GB that came with it and a 1TB Samsung SSD) with no issues. The issue only occurs with the 2ndary, 2.5" SSD:
  1. turn pc on > see the "minisforum" logo and the circle of dots (loading symbol) > loads to windows > plug in the SSD > disk management does not see any SSD whatsoever
  2. pc is off > plug in SSD > turn on PC > see the "minisforum" logo but no circle of dots > and thats it.

thanks for the input, i'll update after the other SSD's arrive. Worse case, it still doesn't work and I'll just have to swap the NVME for a 1TB and work with that
