Hello!
Not sure where to post it, but hope here is fine.
2 years ago i built my 1st pc.
Motherboard: Asus rog z790e
CPU: 13900K
GPU: Rtx 4090
RAM: Corsair vengeance ddr5 6000
PSU: Asus thor 1200w psu
Today after coming home from work PC didnt want to turn on. Nothing happened when i presesd power on button.
I Took it a part and did basic trouble shooting.
Tested if psu was working with paper clip trick and it turned on.
Carefully put everything back together and now asus logo on mobo is on and cpu cooler display was on, but still PC wasnt turning on.
Discord friend pointed out something about reseting cmos. My mobo has cmos reset button. After reseting it PC turned on. Managed to play a game for few minutes and now it wont turn on again...
Asus logo and cpu cooler display is on all the time now.

Any ideas whats happening?

Tested if psu was working with paper clip trick and it turned on.
Just to clarify, the paperclip method is a flawed test, it doesn't tell you how much power the PSU can effectively output to the entire system.

Motherboard: Asus rog z790e
What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard? If you have BIOS versions pending, update to the latest version(version2703 at the time of writing), then clear the CMOS.

I was told that if i do paperclip trick and psu and its fan turned on then psu is fine, but i guess it do not give a whole picture.
Never updated bios myself and im sure it has same version when i purchased mobo.
Cant check because pc wont even start.

By clearing cmos you mean pressing that button on mobo to reset it? Did that after putting pc back together and it maybe helped becsuse i was able to turn it on and play a game for few minutes and then pc shut itself down and i cant get it to start again...

Is this your motherboard?

Use CPU-Z to see what your current BIOS version is, under the Mainboard tab. I was under the impression you were able to get the system running after clearing the CMOS, ever time.

You might want to see if you're able to power the system without the discrete GPU in the system. If that works, then you might want to source(borrow, not buy) a similar quality and wattage PSU and see if the issue persists with the discrete GPU in the system.

remove the coin battery at the bottom of the board and wait a few seconds then but the battery back in.

update the bios using the bios flashback button cpu doesnt need to be present for this you just need another pc download the bios and follow instructions on how set it up.

are you using a 16 pin cable or an adapter for the 4090.

Yes, that is my motherboard. And like i said i managed to start pc after 1st time reseting cmos. But not anymore.
I unpluged everytging from pc and psu apart from conectors to motherboard and cpu. Still nithing.

Yes. I played around with that battery. Removed old one and put new it, but no result.
For my gpu im using cable that cane with it. Cable that splits into 4 connectors that go to psu.

Im not familiar with bios updates, but sure will look into it.

bios updating can revive a motherboard especially if the motherboard has been running on the wrong bios

i would switch out the connectors that came with the 4090 the adapters are known to fail especially if there bent as they are not the greatest quality.

below is a complete cable it says for rt asus but it should work with your psu but to be safe contact cable mod first

Watched some videos on how to update bios for my specific motherboard and it seems i need to boot pc into bios, but i cant do it cuz pc wont turn on.

I disconnected everytging from pc/mobo that u dont need to power it on and still nothing. I dont thinks its gpu or its connector fault.

Incorrect you have a bios flash back button on the back all Asus boards can do this see video below

You will need another computer and a usb blank

Today i took everything out of pc and put in on mobo box for testing. I put 1 stick of ram in slot 1 on mobo and cpu(but without cooler) and 1 chasis fan.
PC started i think. Psu fan was spining and display showed how many W is beeing used. RGB on ram and mobo was glowing and 1 chasis fan was spining.
Display wasnt connected and without cpu cooler didnt want to risk it and unpluged the pc.
did same things with monitor and cpu cooler installed, but so far nothing is happening...

put the 1 stick in slot 2 it wont boot in slots 1 and 3 usually its 2 and 4 the memory must be in.

so if your trying to breadboard slot 2 you need to have the cooler on or it will cook itself to death.

After few tries pc managed to boot up. But i put both ram sticks in slots. Im pretty sure that if i try to turn it off again it wont star.
With this information can i assume that hardware is okey? Should i shut it down and see what happens?

if it boots in slots 2 and 4 should be fine

plug gpu in and see if it posts if it fails either gpu dead or cable is bad or psu cant pull the necessary power.

double check the 4090 port for melting on the adapter or the 12 pin connection

Just did that. PC wont turn on anymore with or without GPU installed...
Nothing is melted on gpu or cable connectors. I doubt its GPU, because yesterday i managed to start pc once and play sone games for few mins before it shut it self down. Same thing today. Managed to power it on twice ib like 6 hours.

I managed to start it up again and it runs fine. I loaded up a game and pc was runing fine till it decided to shut it self down again. And now again it wont start...

I'm rly confused here because i never experienced or hear something like this happening. I cant be the 1st one with this issue...

I managed to get working psu from a friend and PC still wont turn on. What would be next in line for testing mobo, cpu?

PC booted up like 3 times yesterday while i was testing and run fine till it shut it self down. Hard to imagine that mobo or cpu would be bad at this point.

My resources are limited at the moment but im willing to explore all options.

After getting my hands on testing parts(psu, cpu, ram and mobo) i found out that my motherboard was causing the issue. After putting old hardware into new mobo PC ran fine and when i put all new hardware in old mobo same problem(not starting properly and shuting down randomly)
Wish i was able to find out the issue sooner without wasting money on parts i wont need.
Thanks for replays.
