Pc2 5300 vs pc2 6400 interchangable?

My brother-in-law has an old dell with 1gb of pc2 5300 and I have 4gb of Ballistix pc2 6400 just sitting around, can I put this in his dell? I looked and it does have room for my 2-2gb sticks. Will they be any problems? Any suggestions?

Sorry for such an out dated question! I did read up and it seams like it should be fine and that the 6400 will just run slower (at 5300) but work fine.

I'm not much of a computer guy but I really do not want to hurt anything!

I would remove the old modules and use the 4GB kit only. Worst thing that can happen is the computer won't work.
