PC3500 DDR for NF7-S?

I am wondering if PC3500 dual channel ddr would be ok for running a mobile
2500+ Barton XP. I want to use it at the 3200+ speed but would like a little
"extra" for speed and stability sake.

I am also told that PC3200 would suffice and I notice it is available in
CL=2 modules as opposed to the 2.5 which is all I can seem to find for the
PC3500.

Suggestions for some good quality (not terribly extreme) stuff
would be helpful.

Thanks

Ron

I have/like Kingston HyperX PC3200 myself, currently running PC3488 (218MHz)
on my AI7 w/ P4 2.6C (800MHz), sync (1:1). No problems. Got it on promo
from Kingston direct in Dec' 03, $176, model KHX3200AK/1G
(http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/PartsInfo.asp?ktcpartno=KHX320
0AK2/1G), but you can generally ignore the Kingston prices, unless promo'd,
their vastly overstated. It isn't the cheap generic stuff, but it's not the
insanely priced OCZ or Corsair XMS either. And there is a little headroom,
spec'd 2-3-2-6-1, but I run 2-3-2-5-1 just fine.

If you monitor the Kingson direct site, you see these huge drops in price
pop up from time to time, then go away in 3-4 days. Very unpredictable, but
when they occur, they're very sweet, no tax, no shipping, factory direct (so
no warranty issues). My PC3200 is now selling for AT LEAST $100 more on
Pricegrabber!

Example, the following was selling for $233 (shipped) only 3-4 days ago:

http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/partsinfo.asp?promo=boost&ktcpartno=KHX4000K2/1G

I was tempted to get it myself, so I could run 1:1 and increase my FBS a
little more, but in the end, passed.

In general, I think the better and more economical strategy (knowing you
will underclock) is to find high-quality PC3200 that has a little headroom,
rather than PC3500 (or better) and underclock it. Almost all the memory
above PC3200 is at least CAS 2.5, even CAS 3, with considerably looser
timings. It only makes sense if you intend to use it to gain more FSB w/
1:1, otherwise, you're paying extra money for nothing. I'd be willing to
bet that many of the PC3200 and PC3500 modules are IDENTICAL, simply
marketed both ways to garner a few more of your hard earned dollars.
Afterall, almost any decent PC3200 can probably run PC3500 by simply
loosening the DRAM timings to match it! Heck, my PC3200 runs nearly PC3500
w/o changes to timings. Just doesn't make sense (to me). If the PC3500 was
2-3-2-5/6-1, perhaps I'd feel differently.

Btw, many will recommend Crucial, and I like them myself, very stable,
dependable, my only complaint w/ them is there CAS is usually 2.5 or 3, even
for PC3200 (at least last time I checked). I find this very disappointing,
maybe it will OC ok, maybe they're just being overly conservative, but every
time I review their specs, this stands out like a sore thumb. I feel like
I'm driving my dad's oldsmobile when I buy from them (good ol' dependable,
but not too exciting either).

I have Kingston HyperX3500 advertised as CAS2. This is open to
interpretation since it's CAS2 at PC3200 and CAS2.5 at PC 3500. I feel I was
mislead by kingston. I expected PC 3500 at CAS2 just like what is on the
damn label. And will run at 220Mhz at CAS2 with no problem at all. I
upgraded my Bios and notice that THE SPD settings changed for the ram.
Kinston and the booklet says 2-3-3-7 which is what I manually have it set
to. Anyways here's what SPD says to answer your suspicion. Noticed that the
new AI7 bios (16) incorrectly reads the ram as 2-3-3-8 for PC 3200
And and correctly reads it as 2.5-4-4-9 at PC 3500 But my bios does not have
9 as an option. which leave my chioces limited if I ever want faster ram
frequencies. But I'd rather have ram that is CAS2 than a few more mhz on the
fsb using ram that takes 33% longer to get the data to the processor which
results in system that is choked by high latency over priced ram.

Check out http://forum.abit-usa.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=26
for ram answers.
PC3500 would be good for some extra head room for o/cing.

I went for the Muskin PC3200 2-2-2 Special memory
(2-256mb twin pack w/BH-6 chips)

Hope it works!
