Pci-e x1 card into pci slot?

I was wondering if I can install sound card pci-x1 to a PCI slot? I was going to build a system with Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD7-B3. I will have 2 gtx 590 on slot pciex16_1 and pciex16_2 and a sound card. I was reading that the pci-x1 slot on the motherboard is useless because of the heat sink. That leaves me with PCI free.
