also like the 256 mb PCI nvidia card I saw. think it was a 52 or 5600 not sure. Makes no sense to have that much memory on a pci card.

Well actually a MAtrox Parhellia with 256mb would be usefull because it would be primarily for giant resolution across multiple monitors, but yes for the power associated with an FX5200 and for what would be primarily 3D gaming (far too intensive for the FX5200) there is no use on that card. Even the Parhelia would only have ONE particular use, and luckily that's it's primary (almost only) function.

What's wrong with using a 5200 for testing? It's cheap if they screw it up...

Anyways, they'll have to do a PCI-Express version anyways - Dell sells lots of 5200s, and have already made it quite clear they are going totally PCI-Express.

The thing to be discussed is nVs decision to use a PCI-Express <-> AGP bridge, vrs ATIs decision to use native PCI-Express support (and therefor make two versions of each core).

Dell won't be all PCI-EX until long after the rest of us (*they are far from cutting edge, despite all their marketing to promote things like the FX5200SE as being a gamer's rig), and as a proof of concept even the FX5200 doesn't offer much challenge. So learning to do it on an FX5200 doesn't mean that their biggest money maker the mid-range market will have definite parallels. And as for screwing it up, at this point to them the different would be minimal, it's not us who's testing these things at retail prices. IF I were them I'd be more worried about the mid-range market, because all the cheapy 'gamers' will still be running AGP well into 2005, and they will be buying AGP based FX5200s and wondering why D]|[ isn't giving them max fps.

The FX5200 would be better of dropped in lieu of a stipped down FX5700SE/XT/etc core based replacement from those that couldn't even make the FX5700 lineup becuase that is more forward looking as a test platform than the older core.

It's just another example of nV being the standard bearer for making a piece of crap sound/look much better than it is, and Also DELL passing that same PR attitude along to customers. With their hackneyed R9XXXpros which aren't quite so, etc.

And while I was looking forward to the bridge, their delay of the cards until about the time of the socket 939 solutions with PCI-EX, I'm not worried, but yes it might me slightly greater costs, but they will once again be ahead of the curve by going whole hog and having the two discreet solutions.

BTW, the third ATI picture on that first link isn't even a PCI-EX connector it's AGP, but I guess the more pics the better for the reviewers, eh?

Interesting that there is no model number on the chip either unlike the previous line of chips. The code does resemble an RV360, but they usually don't have the radeon there, instead it would have product code (RV380). Oh well can't have everything I guess.
