Some of us tried to hlp you before, but you juswt don't get it.
Every time I turn around, someone is pissing my system for no good reason just because it doesn't have AGP. I'm sick of it. PCI isn't as good as AGP, but it's 100% incorrect to say that I am going to get crappy performance. I will get decent performance - some would say good performance, even though I have PCI. And yet, everyone was saying that my performance was going to be bad. So yes, you all are morons, and I certainly won't be coming back here for help.
Simply put you have NO idea what you are talking about! The reality is that it IS CRAPPY performance. IS it better than YOU are used to? PRobably. However it's crappy performance. 3Dmk2001 isn't a GOOD benchmark for focusing on JUST the graphics card, and ONE test (especially one the owner didn't link to for proof) doesn't make a graphics card, heck we don't even know what resolution that 7000+ score was at and how much of it is attributable to the CPU setup (which greatly affect 3Dmk01). And comparing it to the GF4MX as a 'standard' is comparing different flavours of CRAP.
The PCI slot will cripple any QUALITY cards, even compare the AGP vs PCI of the 9100. Is a PCI card better than onboard graphics, well it depends on which ONES but likely yes, but that's not a ringing endorsemen either. And soon even that will not be true, the R9100IGP and future NV solution (supporting DX9 in the Fx5200 style) will blow it out of the water. Just think of what happens if you slap and audigy card in that same rig, it probably KILLS the graphics because of the traffic along the PCI bus. Heaven forbide you should try to run hig res, or us a PCI network card.
Unlike what you say it's not GOOD performance, the only people who say that are proably running laptops with NEOmagic chips or are ALSO hampered with PCI-only machines, or are to cheap to upgrade from onboard graphics. There may be those fans out there but they are as misguided as those who would say the graphics on the original NES kick-ass NOW; forgetting that they are up against the GameCube, S-PS2 and Xbox!
Now I know what your situation is (heck I was there at one time years ago), however the reality is that the answers I gave you should come with a caveat, this is my suggestion for the BEST CARDS of a CRAPPY solution. If you are into gaming it's almost not worth the money, a cheap GF4ti and a good mobo would do a 'GAMER' better.
Now do YOU PERSONALLY need better performance than you'll get, probably not since you're not really aware of what you're missing anyways and don't consider yourself a 'gamer'. Will you be able to play the next generation games, MAYBE, but most likely NOT. Are you dead in te WATER? likely later, but for the next 6-9mths you'll be treading water while the DX9 titles circle you. That's the thing, you may never notice that it is indeed a poor solution, but you will likley have to play at much lower Res. and much lower FPS than someone with an equivalent card running through the AGP bus. Just think, there are people in this forum who have the R8500LE (similar to 9100), and have LESSER CPUs than the one you linked to. They are getting on avarage 4000+ more 3Dmk01 scores than that guy, an atleast we KNOW they are true scores at DEFAULT resolutions, and even THEIR setups will be the BARE minimum for some of these future titles. You will likely be happy (especially since you seem concerned about Linux, which isn't really a gaming platform [outside of a game server]) with the PCI solutions we recommended, hwever don't think that the system WON'T be subpar for most games (it'll barely meet minimum req. if that). IT's like not failing in school, but getting a D+ (or c- depending on the failing grade for your area), not something to chirp about though.
PCI cards still have their place and that's for ADDITIONAL (3rd & 4th) monitor support.
So seeing that we are 'ALL' morons it feels nice to know that you won't be back to remind us of that fact. You were arguing with people who have top of the line cads running overclocked, and who play games at hi res. with AA/AF on (something you will never do with PCI), there's no way you are going to sell PCI as NOT being Crappy to them. You should have quite while you were ahead.
- You need a licence to buy a gun, but they'll sell anyone a stamp <i>(or internet account)</i> ! <A HREF="http://www.redgreen.com" target="_new"><font color=green>RED</font color=green> <font color=red>GREEN</font color=red></A> GA to SK
