[SOLVED] pcie 3.0 card in a pcie 4.0 slot

so I'm putting in a pcie 3.0 x16 card into a slot that is physically x16 but the motherboard says it will only run pcie 4.0 x8. I don't have a good understanding on pcie which is why I'm asking this. They are theoretically the same speeds (1Gb per lane of 3.0 x16 = 2Gb per lane of 4.0 x8). Will the 3.0 card be able to get full speeds?

Motherboard's PCIe gen will drop to v3 at x16 lanes. It's impossible for a gen 3 card to use PCIe 4 anyway regardless if it limited to x8.

I know I probably wouldn't be able to max out the bandwidth, but I like it when things match up. I'm using the msi x570 prestige creation board

Techspot review wasn't just about bandwidth, they tested PCIe 3 card utilising x16 lanes on a PCIe 4 board. Will be the same with your motherboard. No motherboard will drop lanes with a single card no matter the generation.
