Hi,

I purchased a Renesas PCIe USB 3.0 card because there seems to be a problem with the USB 3.0 ports on my MB.
It then doesnt seem to work, f.e. it doesnt recognize my external HDD.
Device manager in Windows says, -the Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller doesnt start-. I did install the Renesas drivers that came with the card.
Before installing the drivers, Windows used a generic designation for the card, but it did recognize the type of card as such, it was shown in the USB section of device manager.
What does this mean, is the card broken? Or, does anybody know a solution?

MB: ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero (2017)
OS: Windows 10 (64 bit).
Thanks,
Arnoud

Got a link to the adapter?

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time. You've mentioned the OS but we'll need to know what version(not edition) of OS you're currently on. Perhaps you'll need to update your OS, chipset drivers and manually install the adapter's driver in an elevated command.

Okay, thanks.
Ive been looking for hours and hours in the mean time, but cant find a solution up to now.

You MAY have a power issue. Like all cards of this type, the card has a power input socket (VERY likely a 4-pin Molex connector) to which you MUST connect a power output connector from your PSU. Probably this will be on the wires that also have some SATA power outputs. The PCIe bus provides only minimal power to operate cards plugged in, but it cannot provide the higher power needs of external devices plugged into its cards. So if you do NOT connect that power supply line to this card, the card itself may operate and communicate with your system, but NONE of the USB3 devices (your external drive, for example) can run or even be recognized. Check that you do have an adequate power supply connected from your PSU to the card.

You should check with the manual for that card and its maker. I doubt that such a card could supply to an attached USB2 device enough power to run, with the possible exceptions of light-power items like a keyboard or mouse. But USB3 devices are designed to use MORE power at max, so I am sure that card can NOT supply that much power to one USB3 device, let alone to four! This card may well be able to communicate with USB2 or USB3 devices that have their own power supply, but not with a device that gets its power from the USB3 port.

So, what devices are you trying to use? Laptop hard drive? Optical drive? HDD in an external enclosure? Any of those might work just fine IF it comes with its own "power brick" and you use that to provide the power that device needs.
