I am going to buy a new pc and i a got a dude. What is better an athlon XP 2100+ or an 2.4 ghz pentium 4 (northwood, 512 kb L1) both with ddr 333?, iam a gamer 😀 and i will use it for games.

Well, P4 CPU that you mention will overclock well, so you will end with a more powerfull PC. As for DDR, I will go for RDRAM 1066 if you can, is the best for hungry bandwith P4.

If you don't plan to overclock and are more budget restricted, go for the XP2100+ and DDR333.

Anyway, both systems can hold ANY games, because the critical factor here is the graphic card. Suggestion: save some bugs with the XP config and spend those $ in a ATI 9700 Pro. Your games are gonna fly ;-)

DIY: read, buy, test, learn, reward yourself!

I dunno...

I'm still a little leery of the Radeon 9700Pro...

I mean besides that we'll probably be seeing a DDRII rendition just in time for Xmas, the whole extra voltage thing just bugs me. I personally plan on waiting for the next GPU revision just so that I know things will be smooooooooooth. The current Radeon 9700Pro just seems like a really rushed product. Sure it works, but in theory so did the Willamette...

It all depends on how much you want to spend. The athlon right will probably save you from $100 to $200. The P4 offers slightly higher stock performance and much greater overclockablity. If you have the money to spend why not go for the p4? Then again though, to unleash the full power of a p4 you should get rdram which costs 2x as much as ddr....

I agree with what is said above....mostly. Save the $$ and get the XP2100 (actually, I would wait a little and get the XP2400 Tbred as it OC much better)...then use the extra $$ to get an GEFORCE 4 Ti4600...or to save even more $$ go with the G4 Ti4200 and OC it to hell (I have my Ti4200 OC to 315 core (15 mhz faster than the 4600) and 590mhz memory (about 100mhz SLOWER than the 4600 (i believe))...it all comes out to about 8% slower than the 4600 at 1/3 the cost. In any case...for now STAY AWAY FROM THE ATI CARDS! There are too many driver issues right now. I would say that the ATI cards will stable in 6 months to a year or so, but who knows...ATI has a reputation for being really slow with their drivers...though admittadly they seem to be on the ball when it comes to fixing driver problems with their new card....we shall see.

My recommendation: XP2400+ and a G4Ti4200

"I doubt he wants to wait a month for the XP 2400+. Just go with the P4." - buddry

Uh, a quick look at Pricewatch and you will note that the XP2400+ is now up and some places are taking pre-orders. After a few phone calls, I was told by 3 different distributers that they will have the chip in stock no later than October 1st, but they are expecting the chips as soon as September 27th. Even if October 1st is the real date, that is only 12 days away. The PRE-ORDER cost is the same as the Intel P4 2400 but I also confirmed that when they have them in stock, the price is expected to drop to $140-$160 range.

Personally...i would wait for the XP2400+...

Though, if at all possible...this is the worst time to be purchasing / upgrading computers...wait until January if you have any possible way to do so....
