OK i want to preface this, that i know very little about Mobile processors and less about Pentium M processors. I have what shows in the bios, and on the chip and in SiSoft as a 2.4 ghz pentium M processor. It's running at 1.2ghz...half speed?! The temps are good...22.5c currently under 100% load...f@h.

At half speed I would hope that the temps would be good
Try bumping up the FSB or multiplier...

I tried moving the fsb up some...with no luck, it'll move a little, but not much. The memory is (currently) running at 333 which is odd...because it's supposed to be running at 33+fsb (only bios option for increasing the memory speed...suck)...and i was under the impression that it was running at 100 (fsb). Lets assume the memory is running at 266. I have 400 geil generic memory in there. So it should have the headroom to push higher...Pushing the fsb causes me to remove the battery =/.

This IS a desktop mobo btw. So i think my problems are in part (if not entirely) stemming from that.

But i think for whatever reason, the multiplier is lowering itself as far as it can, for no apparent reason. I'd just like to know why. (i think i've already answered my question though...)

If the FSB is actually at 333, hten try scaling back the FSB and upping the multiplier.

Does not your mobo manual tell you the info required to set the multiplier of your processor.

And the sign says "You got to have a membership card to get inside" Huh

The fsb is 100. Quad pumped or whatever... So the memory would be 200 ddr...or in this case, 266, since i've reset the memory to be "fsb + 33". So 133x2 266. The multiplier is locked in the bios, i can't change it. There isn't a place to change it physically on the mobo either. I'm thinking bios update at this point...only i already have the latest update.

I can't touch the multipliers. It says "Locked" in the bios. There aren't any options to unlock it, either on the mobo or in the bios. Obviously this is untrue, because the bios itself says it's a 2.4 ghz processor, but everything else says it's actually running at 1.2... oh well...i'm done for today at work...head'n home.

The new 2.26GHZ are out, or soon. Actually, if it is speed stepping, load some heavy intensive programs up, and see if the Multiplier doesnt jump back and show full CPU potential...

That's sorta the thing tho...it's supposed to throttle if it gets hot or if the bat is low, or if it's simply running on the bat...depending on how you setup your laptop. However, this isn't a laptop, it's a desktop, and thus has much better cooling...So, 22c is feasible, but it shouldn't be stepping it down, because it's A. Plugged in, and B. not hot. So i don't know why it's stepping down.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. The P4-M has multiple multipliers for power savings features, and automatically uses the LOWEST one when installed in a Desktop board.

Gee, I thought everyone knew that! Anandtech certainly made a big deal of it when they used a P4-M specifically for the purpose of testing the bus speed capability of a motherboard.

OK, so what to do? You can't change the multiplier, so all you can do is raise the bus speed. 12x200 is the same CPU clock as 24x100, so...since you're locked at 12x, you'll want a board that supports 200 bus (QDR800) and allows you to chose that bus manually within BIOS.

I suggest the Abit IS7. Chances are, with the IS7 you'll actually be able to get 250MHz bus and 3.0GHz.
